Here is this totally anonymous quote which has prompted me to make this thread.

Quote

The other day I was on MW, you know, and um, I saw this quote where Moiraine was thinking to herself and she used the I pronoun and I was like "whoa that is so weird having Moiraine talk about Moiraine. Does she realize she is... Moiraine ?"

I would also like to know the answer to this. :D

I are confused. Was the quote from Moiraine's own thoughts from a passage from her PoV? Don't most people use "I" when internally monologuing? As in, "I'm hungry, I'm gonna go get some cookies." :D

Such a wonderfully ponderous thought this person has had. :D

I don't know if Moiraine is fully aware of how awesome she is. Maybe after she comes back from the "dead" and Rand hands her a crown and Nynaeve weeps and begs forgiveness, Moiraine will stand there next to her throne and be like "that's right. I'm MOIRAINE, bitches!"

Yes, but she is Moiraine. Anonymous wants to know if she realizes that she is Moiraine. Moiraine herself, the one who gloats about fog. Moiraine of the blue spandex jumpsuit on the cover of NS. Moiraine who balefires like a BAMF and has a thing for eyes that are blue and maybe also People With Power.

Does she even know.

EDIT: She's the Queen Bitch of BAMF Mountain, baby. Yeah she might know.

O I C!

I don't think so. All RJ's heroes are pretty modest about their accomplishments, always saying someone else is better, or they only did what they had to do, etc. See Nyn's whining about her cowardice, or Mat saying he isn't a bloody general, or Momo wishing she had Siuan's courage, or ANY of the main boys thinking how much better the other two are with women. Excessive gloating about your own awesomeness is something jerks and villains do in WoT, like Elaida and the Forsaken.

Also, "Moiraine of the blue spandex jumpsuit on the cover of NS" is made of lol.

To answer your question Olivia, what made this thought occur in the first place was not so much the use of "I" in internal monologue which is natural, as you say, but the fact that because the quote is by its lonesome with no real context it simply reads as first person narrative. Considering WoT is close third person it is a little odd to suddenly, again without the context that this is someone thinking, read a character refer to themselves using "I". Perhaps it is also due to the fact that I believe it was the only quote at this time that we have in our little database where any of the characters refer to themselves. All the rest use proper names, because again, the story is close third person. And as such, to have Moiraine be aware of...Moiraine, it was a very strange moment in the middle of the night. A moment when I said "Moiraine...do you realize you are indeed the Moiraine?"

If we consider thoughts as life-forms reproducing through speech and other media, then Moiraine could be truly alive in lots of minds all over. Then, for her to be self aware, in any given mind, is a distinct possibility.

By using 27 internets can she make herself manifest for real? This is what I want to know. I mean, am I going to wake up one morning and find out that Moiraine is King of the World but not in a Titanic Celine Dion way?

I think it's more likely that some fanatic Moiraine lover *looks around* will think too much about her until the Moiraine goes skynet on that mind and takes over the body.

Well this is fun!

DO any of us really ever know who we are? Consider that we never ever see life as it is actually happing. Honestly, there is always a nano second where our eyes are taking in the information around us. A degree of separation from the actual moment. We only ever see reflected shadows of the past. Hehe.

Discuss!

Yes~ This is fascinating.

For example, a long time ago Marie thought I was a six foot tall Nordic woman that learned how to speak English very well considering it wasn't my first language. This is how she saw me!

Maybe in some other alternate reality I am a six foot tall non-english speaking woman. *mind boggles*
