This is more of a rhetorical question. Actually, it is mostly just late night rantings.
Even after my eighth or so reread of the Moiraine chapters (what, me? a fangirl?) I still get a bit miffed at Thom leaving Moiraine hanging. Maybe it's because she has her hand all extended to him and is vulnerable and exposed, but seriously.
You just risked your neck to rescue her, dug her out of a scolding hot steam blanket thing, you're standing there holding tea like you're going to magically put some in her belly because God forbid she sneezes! But when she calls you on your obvious affection you go all "Oh well, hm, I just don't know...."
However, I have come to the conclusion that Thom--and Moiraine--are a bit on the melodramatic side. There couldn't be a simple discussion of feelings and decision to marry. Oh no no.
There had to be a declaration, proclamation, hesitation, sacrifice, rejection, acceptance...
...babies.
It is what it is. But I still roll my eyes at Thom every time I read the scene.
Why the hesitation, Thom?

Have you ever considered that Thom might have planned a dinner in details with candles and a ring hidden in the dessert for years and years ever since he was little and first figured girls could be nice too, and then Moiraine ruins it just like that?

You know you have a point. She probably did ruin his romantic plans.

Yeah, well, she probably would have swallowed her ring anyway. Some girls are like that...all gulpgulpgulp.

I will accept this version of the story.
Also, she asked him in front of Mat, so he didn't even have an easy out.

I admit I was surprised at his reaction considering all he did to get her back.

I always thought thom would be the one to bring up marriage.
but moiraine really is a romantic at heart. altho, it's a bit sneaky asking in front of witnesses.

She must have known he would become her husband between Min, the Snakes answers, and the rings. Surely she knew. Still, I did not enjoy seeing her extend herself in such a fashion.

I like that she proposed. It was not expected, and that is to be expected with the Mo.
As for Thom... Marie's version of their melodrama fits. It had to be a drawn out thing. Also, it was like Thom was wanting to make sure the air was cleared about his issues with Aes Sedai first. Maybe he planned a monologue but Moiraine ruined it. And so, yeah, he had to quickly go through monologue and take out the best bits to say. I wanted someone to stand behind Thom with a stick and prod him at that point.
How long had he been planning to sing that song to her about fear is what I want to know. Did he practice? She liked it.
