A real WoT dream this time. I'm having quite a cold, and probably fever, so that means nasty dreams.

 

Thom and Moiraine were in it, strangely enough. The only thing I remember clearly is Thom's messenger avatar: a cartoon version of himself. After that it all took place on a road nearby that usually pops up in my nightmares. From there, the actual plot eludes me.

 

Thom would have a cartoon avatar of his own self.

Hmm, I do have dreams now and then, but I hardly remember them after I wake up. One thing I remember though is that they are filled with a lot of people I know (both real and fictional)

Well then, dreams. I have a lot of those and they're usually pretty vivid. In my humble opinion (dangerous way to begin, but here it goes) to simply say that dreams are a mere defragmentation of our subconscious seems to me like an over simplification. First of all it implies that we are (at best) nothing more than a computer. That thought chills me more then death.

To simply write off the soul is to write off everything that makes us human beings. Our hopes, our pains, our desires, our passions. For me dreams are a link.

John - Perhaps you feel most attuned right before or after deep sleep because you are in something of a meditative state? When we clear the clutter of the day (or night of dreaming) the quiet can help us ... well, self realize. It's an awful new age thing to say, but I just mean it in practical terms. It's our brains/selves settling down.

 

I think there is always more for us to learn, so I am not sure I could say what I believe one way or another.

Computers are stupid machines that do the calculating we tell them to. We're the smart ones, and I just pointed out that souls have nothing to do with dreams.

 

I don't know what a soul is for other people, but to me personality has a lot to do with it, and it is personality that determines what the meaning is of all the junk we drag up when we're asleep. That could be one interpretation.

 

If we're not allowed to dream however, like if some evil nazi wakes us regularly before we get into the REM, it will kill us in the long term.

 

And since dreams are a great way to escape the dull superego, it's fun too.

That's the fun thing about thoughts. They're simply that. Yours inspired mine. I've always been inclined to the thought that the brain and heart (soul if you will) are as closely linked as science and religion.

Note, I'm not trying to open a religious debate. Far from it. Instead I think the dreams should remain focus. Last night I had a creepy weird one about a shaggy black cat with jade and purple eyes! Something about Moiraine and Lan and a mountain lion thing that didn't seem to like me very much.

I think a soul is the consequence of life. I also like to liken ( :3 ) a soul to a flame. A flame needs fuel to survive, and the more fuel the grander the flame. The fuel is experiences that then turn to ash or memories but the ash can both strengthen and weaken the fire. The ash and the smoke and the scorch marks represents out influence of the world, these will linger after the fire is extinguished but will also fade in time, the bigger the fire the bigger the marks and the longer they remain.
