How absolutely mad was Elayne to do that? Crazy.

Yeah, that was pretty crazy. It wasn't a bad plan, but too impulsive. The idea comes to her during a play then she immediately goes to do it without even telling her Warder, ffs! I did think it was a cool idea to have a good char finally impersonate a Forsaken, as we know the Forsaken have been doing that to each other for books. I did roll my eyes at the cliche-ness of Elayne's disguise. Seriously - a black cloak and glowing red eyes? Why not a throne of skulls while you're at it? Mesaana's silver-and-black disguise was much more creative.

 

On another note, I was sad when Nicola died. She was kinda bitchy at times but she's been with us since TFoH and she's really just a more foolhardy version of Egwene, wanting to throw herself headfirst into every danger, stubbornly convinced she can overcome it. It's really only luck that Egwene survived her encounters with the BA and Forsaken in the early books, whereas Nicola was killed. I feel bad for her lover Areina.

I feel that way too. I remember thinking "Well, Perrin's less annoying now" but I have no interest in re-reading any of his chapters. It's more like a relief that I'm done reading about his "development." I will probably never re-read TOM or TGS again, other than the Moiraine stuff. It's kinda hard going from your favorite author (by a mile) to an author who is pretty good. It was always going to be that way though. There's no other book/series I've read as many times as WoT.

This is probably blasphemy but I didn't care much for the gholam chapter. It was more like "Thank god that's finally out of the way"

 

I liked every other Mat chapter though. I also liked all of the Rand chapters. The more I think about AMoL the less worried I am about it, because the stuff I didn't like about TOM isn't similar to what I expect to see in the last book. We don't have to read about Perrin struggling with himself or learning how to Dreamwalk. That was at least 40% of the book. We won't have to read about Elayne's politicking. And every time we have to read about a character we don't like, they will more than likely be in the company of characters we do like, so it will offset.

 

I expect it to be something like this:

 

19%: Most of the cast together at the start

19%: Rand, Moiraine, Nynaeve saving the world

19%: Perrin fighting bad guys

19%: Mat/Seanchan fighting bad guys

19%: Logain at BT/Lan/etc fighting bad guys

1.66%: Loial saves the day

1.66%: Demandred almost ruins everything

1.66%: Fain almost ruins everything

The gholam parts were a bit of a drag for me, but then they always have been.

 

It was a bit disappointing the lack of Fain. I would have preferred more of him and less of Perrin.

I have to admit, despite its flaws, this book did make me lol several times.

 

End of Chap 44:

Perrin shook his head to himself, then bent to untie the sack and ease the poor badger Mat had captured.

Easing the Badger. I wonder if Sanderson will work a nine horse hitch in somewhere too.

Vaguely horrified at Elaida's token appearance. Especially as she taught the Seanchan travelling, suggesting that it would eventually bring down the White Tower. Epic sigh.

I believe Lanfear may be alive. After Moiraine was rescued she said someone came but said "She is not the one I want".

And she thought the foxes/snakes just said they "drained her too fast and killed her" to scare her.

I don't know who else would be in the tower that someone would want besides those two.

(Will go back and quote book directly later...just woke up, stayed up reading to finally "finish" *cough skipping parts* the book).

I believe Lanfear may be alive. After Moiraine was rescued she said someone came but said "She is not the one I want".

I don't know who else would be in the tower that someone would want besides those two.

 

Lanfear=Cyndane. When Rand saw her in the dream she didn't look like Lanfear but he knew it was her.

 

Here's the theory I believe.

 

 

Moridin (or a henchman) went in for Lanfear. She was alive at that point. If she hadn't been they would never have needed to enter because the Dark One would have transmigrated her already. Moridin's demand was that they kill her. After she died the Dark One put her in a new body. Cyndane has less power than Lanfear because she was partially drained by the 'Finn.

They won't bring down the White Tower unless Aviendha's visions are true. Tuon saying "The White Tower is doomed" made me feel that way, but then when I re-read it I realized they don't want to destroy the tower. They want to capture marath'damane to use to take Seanchan back. She also mentions/thinks that she wants to capture the White Tower (not destroy it). Also, we know that the WT is still standing in Aviendha's visions until a couple hundred years later.

 

 

My favorite theory here is that the Seanchan do invade the White Tower through the basement like they are planning, but most or all of the WT's inhabitants are at the Field of Merrilor, so the Seanchan have nobody to collar. The details are hazy after that, but somehow I think Tuon will end up at the meeting with Rand. Maybe Mat is in the WT to fetch the horn because he's seen Caemlyn. He'll have Grady with him.
