  1. Welcome back, and congrats on finishing basic! Officer training, hmm? Forgive me if I'm mistaken but not just anybody can become an officer, so that's pretty good?

It's good to see you again!

Thank you for the congratulations! And no, not just anybody can be an officer, possibly including myself. The Army has all the people it needs right now, so it can afford to be choosy who it commissions. Right now OCS is being quite ruthless at weeding people out. Hopefully I have what it takes...

There were actually a few other WoT fans in my platoon at Basic. That gave us something to talk about during the occasional long periods of boredom.

  2. The only points at which I disliked something about Moiraine occurred in New Spring, which was a much younger and less wise version of her, as she herself admitted to Lan in tGH.

In particular, the scene where it is strongly implied that she left an innkeep to be raped disturbed me. It's true that the woman in question was evil and deserved to be punished - maybe even executed - but turning a blind eye to rape is completely beyond the pale.

Another thing that annoyed me about Moiraine - though to a much lesser degree - was her lingering snootiness, aghast at the notion that Siuan was attracted to a "mere footman."

The Moiraine of the main series is a vastly different person; two decades has tempered her wrath and quelched her arrogance.

  3. Gah. Using the internet again after being cut off from all information for over 10 weeks is like a desperate gasp for breath after being waterboarded nonstop for two and a half months. I managed to survive...somehow. I was attending Basic at Ft. Benning, Georgia. (In the soldierly tradition of assigning female names to weapons, guess what I named mine...a fitting name: beautiful, elegant, precise, deadly).

Checking up on the WoT fandom - including this site - was one of the first things I did when I gained access to a computer. I'm glad to see Moiraine's World still humming along.

It looks like the fantasy genre has been eventful the past few months. Dance with Dragons was finally announced and Kvothe Gets a Job...er, I mean The Wise Man's Fear was released. Lots of reading I need to catch up on.

My current circumstances (languishing in a holding company at Officer Candidate School) prohibit me from being too active on here, and I might be disappearing again for a few weeks (if I successfully class-up into the course) but hopefully I'll be able to pop in from time to time.

It's good to be back. :)

  4. I just discovered that the lady that works at the local pizza joint is named Galina.

That's awesome. :D Though I wouldn't eat any of her pizza if I were you. ;)

The pizza wasn't bad at all, actually. :)

By the way folks, I know I'm not exactly an insider here, but I will not have access to a computer for the next 10 weeks (seriously) so you won't be hearing from me during that time. But I'll be back eventually, and I look forward to rejoining the discussion of everyone's favorite Aes Sedai.

May the Light illumine all of you. :)

  5. The scene where Moiraine scares the hell out of the Whitecloaks in Baerlon...that sequence is exquisitely cinematic.

Though honestly, tEotW would not be easily adapted to a screenplay without major structural changes that combine elements from the other books. I'm interested to see how they will manage this.

  6. I'm pretty sure Moiraine is at 100%; she "died" once already.

Cadsuane seems destined to go out in a blaze of glory: I'd say 20% chance of survival.

Before ToM, I was sure that Min was a goner; she was being set up as a sacrificial lamb. Now I'm not so sure: 50% chance of survival.

I see some pessimism regarding Lan's prospects in the first two posts. I would put him above 80%, because Min had a viewing involving a child.

The secondary and tertiary characters will be dropping like flies, but I doubt more than one of the primaries will die; Jordan had a well-known reluctance to kill off his characters (something I do not fault him for).

There's actually an interview of Jordan on Youtube and the interviewer asks him if he's going to miss his characters once the series is complete. He thought for a second, and said, "No, because in my mind they'll still be kicking around somewhere."

That implies most will have happy endings.

  7. Maybe he'll throw her in a pond again next time he sees her.

The dynamics over Lan's bond was another underwhelming aspect of the series; it had been an outstanding issue for so long that I was sure RJ had more elaborate intentions for it, but in Towers of Midnight, Nynaeve simply goes to find Myrelle, asks for the bond, and gets it.

But I guess we'll see how things go in aMoL.

  8. Last year, after finishing The Gathering Storm, I shared some thoughts over on Tor.com for a cool scene that I hoped would be in Towers of Midnight. It's not related to Moiraine's rescue directly, but rather its immediate side effects. Picture this:

Nynaeve Travels to Tarwin's Gap to join the Golden Crane in its battle against the Shadow. To her utter horror, she arrives with the battle in progress. Frantic, she searches for Lan, only to find him lying on the ground, mortally wounded. Heartbroken, she kneels over Lan's body (as per Min's viewing), overcome with grief. Her anguish is particularly wrenching because in spite of the Healing skills she is so proud of, she was unable to save her own husband. But just as the last speck of life is about to vanish from Lan's body, his eyes fly open and he gasps, "Moiraine!" because at that very instant, Thom and Mat pull the Blue Sister out of Finnland. Only now, Moiraine is insanely powerful, having received Lanfear's level of power due to the latter's inferior bargaining skills with the Eelfinn. With the warder bond now restored, all that energy surges into Lan, bringing him back from the brink of death.

Once Nynaeve realizes what just happened, any lingering resentment she harbors for Moiraine vanishes: instead of standing between Lan and Nynaeve, Moiraine has just given Lan back to her.

I thought this would have been a very dramatic and effective way to reconcile Moiraine's return with the other two characters, both of which were strongly linked to Moiraine in earlier books: Lan through the Warder bond, and Nynaeve through her old simmering hatred.

Of course, it rested on a number of assumptions that did not pan out:

    (1) The warder bond would be somehow restored between Moiraine and Lan upon the former's return, despite Myrelle holding the bond;

    (2) Moiraine would be stronger upon her return;

    (3) There is s direct correlation between the strength of the Aes Sedai and the benefits that the Warder receives from the bond.

Tenuous assumptions, so the theory was always a bit of a stretch. Still, it would have been cool. :P

  9. I guess I should clarify: Sanderson tweeted that one of the prequels involved a backstory involving Thom's arrival in Emond's Field...he did not explicitly say that it involved an encounter between him and Moiraine, but it would have been the same prequel that also told of Moiraine and Lan's arrival.

But listening to tEotW again, there are just so many hints that indicate a previous encounter. I don't think they "met," per se, but they were somehow aware of one another. They were both in Baerlon at about the same time; Min mentioned that her viewing was of two people, who never spoke to one another, that would marry. When they were on their way back north, of course they had spoken by then. Lots of things like that.

  10. Also wanted to point out that, while Thom was traveling with Moiraine and Co., he would entertain them all at night after they stopped to make camp. Plenty of times for her to laugh at his quips then.

There are also hints of some sort of encounter between Moiraine and Thom when they were in Baerlon, on their way south into the Two Rivers. It seems that Min's famous viewing about the two of them marrying occurred then. In one of his recent Tweets, Sanderson mentioned that one of the unpublished prequels included this backstory.

  11. The one scene I can think of offhand is when Moiraine laughs at Thom's antics with his dagger as they're all waiting for the ferry across the Taren river.

I'm actually listening to tEotW audio right now...it's amazing the things you notice on a re-read or a re-listen.

For example, Moiraine seems to know exactly who Thom is at their first encounter. I also noticed that, when Rand brings his wounded father to the Winespring Inn, desperate for help, Thom is on the verge of suggesting he seek out the Aes Sedai, but he hesitates and instead asks who scrawled the Dragon's Fang on the front door.

  12. I'm not sure if I want Perrin to marry the two of them, but I'm looking forward to some Moiraine/Perrin interaction. The Dragon Reborn is probably my 2nd-favorite book in the series, but I was actually a bit annoyed with Moiraine's treatment of Perrin during their journey to Tear; of all the Two Rivers folk, he deserved it the least. To his credit, he doesn't hold it against her, as indicated by his desire to accompany Mat and Thom on the rescue, and his internal thoughts concerning the possibility of Moiraine being alive ("Light, let it be so...", or something like that IIRC). I'm interested to hear Moiraine's thoughts concerning how Perrin has developed as a character.

  13. The dance scene was epic adorableness! Thanks for reminding me of it. She was like, "I won't laugh at you Rand because you are so bad to dance with that even a giggle would be far too mean. You know I know this means you are terrible in bed. Poor Egwene. Fail." :pat: And in response Rand was all, "Gulp. Pretty Lady." :sheep:

She could tell all that from the way he danced? :|

I guess I'm going to need dance lessons.

  14. Some of the New Spring comic art is really good, but my two favorites are the Terese Nielsen depiction and this sketch, the origin of which I am unsure of. I vaguely recall seeing it somewhere on DeviantArt.

The Nielsen version communicates very well her Aes Sedai dignity and confidence. The other picture, though much simpler, does a good job of capturing her serenity, as well her "big and dark" eyes and "dark hair hanging in lazy ringlets."

The second picture is a close approximation of my mental image of her.

  15. Not exactly "adorable"

    I beg to differ!

I loved when she fell over and Rand had to catch her, heh

LoL, I agree actually. It was pretty adorable. :P

And now that I think about it, there was another scene in TEOTW where Moiraine collapses into Lan after channeling against Trollocs. Just before they entered Shadar Logoth, IIRC.

Oh, and the dance scene in Baerlon.

  16. Passing out in Lan's arms twice: after the trolloc attack at the beginning of tDR, and when she's returning from Rhuidean in tSR. Not exactly "adorable," but it reminded the reader that she's still human and needs some help from time to time.
