Killer - Moiraine

Recommended Posts

A very disturbing thought appeared in my, already obsessed mind, and it concerns a certain event in New Spring, specifically the point where Momo stabs Merean. (I think that's the name of that Black Mistress of Novices).

Until that moment RJ paints a very vivid and a very precise image of a young, and somewhat naive Moiraine. We end up knowing her favorite outfits, her habits, her pillowfriendly exploits, and her thoughts...on pretty much everything, including the sadness she feels after the deaths of Bryce, Iselle, etc...but, that is her only reaction.

There is no mention, at least not that I know of, of her thoughts regarding the fact that she just killed another human being, an evil one, yes, but still, she thought good of Meren, pretty much till the end...So, iyo, is that a normal reaction? Was she in shock? Ooor, maybe, did Daes'Daemar made Momo a cold blooded killer in the past?

(I know it is a longshot, but hey, it is kinda weird xD)

That was likely the first time she killed someone (with her own hands at least), so it's understandable to think she'd have a bigger reaction. Maybe she was in shock like you said, but I think she just didn't want to trouble herself over the death of such an evil person, even one she knew. Determination for her quest overruled any other emotions, which would become her defining trait in the main series.

And by that point in NS she had been jittery with suspicion about the Black Ajah for, about, 2 weeks or something, so maybe during that time she prepared herself for the possibility of actually having to kill a Black sister. But even Lan comments on how hard she is when he sees her calmly disposing of Merean's corpse. That's our Momo. :stab:

I never thought about it before. I guess, to me, I was thinking about her and Lan exactly the same way. She was a soldier fighting her enemy and Lan was a soldier fighting his.

But then, Merean was the first person Mo probably killed. I kinda agree with Lan in that if she were going to react it would be then.

He does feel what's going on with her after the bonding, though we're not privy to Mo's emotions. He treats her like a new warrior.

She wasn't that cold hearted about it. I always read the scene as her trying to act how she thought an Aes Sedai should, that was better than showing weakness.

The Game of Houses is a dangerous game, however later books have characters, including Moiraine, mentioning how much worse it has become in recent times. Murder wasn't as common beforehand in the short time Moiraine would have had to play the Game before going to the Tower.
