Emotional reactions

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that some people seem to have emotional reactions to certain scenes from WoT. And that I am not one of them.

Moiraine/Lanfear scene? I laughed.

Nynaeve breaking her block? Didn't care.

Dumai's Walls...not a big whoop for me.

I will say that The Letter did cause me to feel a ton of joy, and then shame; horrible writing Moiraine, horrible.

Anything dealing with Rand and his hos makes me want to gag, but I don't think that counts.

And so I ask, what about you?

Moiraine/Lanfear scene: Oh shit! no... no... this is NOT happening!

Nynaeve breaking her block: I don't even recall it

Dumai Wells: *yawn*

The Letter: 100% shame

Additionally:

Any Min/Rand scene: *gag*

Any other Rand scene: :boogie:

Any Lan scene:

*****, please.

People died at Dumai's Walls (sic), or more accurately, Dumai's Wells. So what if someone left someone else a letter? Oh heartbreak! Tears! Melancholy!

Some folks who were at the Wells cannot speak of these things anymore. Why, do you ask? Gee I don't know oh yeah THEY'RE DEAD!

To say that death bothers less people than heartbreak is ludicrous.

People died elsewhere in the series. And I never hear anyone speaking of it in such terms; it's usually "OMG that was such a cool battle u guys!!11"

*shrugs* It just isn't one of the scenes that stands out in my mind. Adeleas' death was sad to me, as was Vandene's. That just pissed me off, I was so upset. I felt bad about Anaiya as well.

So I suppose there are a few scene that do it for me, just not the ones all the male readers seem to like.

Moiraine's death was a sad thing, although I had come to expect it. More so, the effect of moiraine's death on lan and his words to rand,.... they were quite poignant.

Rand making a mad ashaman drink poison is quite sad.

On the other hand,

Nyn breaking her block is one of my fave scenes.

The power struggle b/n nyn and moggie was good, so was the scene when rand cuts off the black cords binding asmo to the DO. Some of the other awesome parts Rand - Rahwin , Rand - Sammael, the use of the bowl of winds, etc.

Also I personally like the part when rand goes into the glass ter'angreal in rhuidean and sees through the eyes of his ancestors.

No, I didn't find Dumai Wells too hot, really (sorry 45!). As for deaths, I found them more shocking in the early books, when they're travelling through those deserted towns, knowing that Dark creatures have wiped out entire towns of innocent people, including children.

On the other hand, if you're having a pitched battle, it's pretty safe to assume some (many) lives will be lost. If you go to war, expect to die! *shrug* It's a pity Rand's head wasn't chopped off! I did not like the way he made those Aes Sedai swear fealty to him.

Oh, I thought what Nynaeve did in KoD was very brave.

Alright alright, so women don't dig the war scenes that much. In particular, I loved how Aram is become death to all Aielmen and pretty much everyone else who crosses his path. From a pansy Tinker to a formidable swordsman, courtesy of Tam al'Thor thank-you-very-much. I thought it sucked what happened to him in KoD.

As for non-war stuff in the WoT, I loved when Nynaeve healed Logain. He was just like "Oh, stop it already. You're never going to....ohhh..."

And how the Aes Sedai (Samitsu?) was making all sorts of "offers" to Damer Flinn when he healed the stilled sisters and Rand's shadar logoth dagger wound.

But I still think the end of Lord of Chaos was one of the best endings evar.

"Kneel to the Lord Dragon, or you will be knelt [you Tar Valon witches]." AWESOME!

It may sond wierd but one of my favourite scenes was actually the scene that got me into The Wheel of Time - how Bran Al´Vere explained the fight at Emond´s Field. ´Till then the book was a little bit boring to me (except the Myrddraal thing, it was awesome) and I almost considered to leave it be... Then...

Other favourites - Moiraine scenes. Mostly all of them. Marie may have won the prize for biggest Moiraine fan, but... :P I was so pissed off when in the fourth book there was only one chapter with her in it. I was reading the book mostly because of her. I remember peeking into the next chapter to see if she was there... :boogie::shock::razz:

This is why her death had a huge impact on me and this is a scene that I personally hate...

As a boy probably I liked the battles. just the way they where described, not that people die (sorry 45 but I think that this was ridiculous to say that people here like deaths). When I read the chapters with battles I was so much into the reading and couldn´t stop doing it. The way RJ writes the battles is just awesome IMO and he really has the feel of the time going really fast which I am sure is more than correct.

The cleansing of Saidin was also awesome.

I still haven´t read KoD so can I ask you to say `SPOILER` when writing for KoD?

Well, the Significant Other doesn't dig RJ's war scenes much either. He found Dumai Wells "useless" apart from how Rand escaped! And that battle between the Aiel factions somewhere in book 4 or 5? He and another of my friends (the guy who introduced me to WoT) found it totally baffling (even though I found it okay!).

Oh, and I know people here will kill me for this, but the Siuan Sanche post-Amyrlin storyline: *yawn*

I don't think Dumai's Wells was necessarily useless. I think it primarily served to showcase the awesome might of the Black Tower. The numbers at the beginning of the battle were as follows:

Under Perrin Aybara:

-9 Aes Sedai

-6,000 Aiel (94 of which were fairly strong Wise Ones)

-500 armsmen bearing Lord Dobraine Taborwin's sigil

-200 Mayener Winged Guards

-about 300 Two Rivers men

-1000 wolves

on the White Tower side:

-27 Aes Sedai

-500 Warders/Younglings

ALL VERSUS

40,000 Aiel (est. 200-300 Wise Ones)

TOTAL: 8,009 strong (103 channelers) VS. 40,000+ strong (2-3x as many channelers), 1 : 5 ratio (good guys:Shaido) overall

Battle was obviously in favor of the Shaido until the arrival of the Asha'man, whose numbers shifted the ratio to a negligible degree. It served to illustrate that in all-out battle, two hundred channeling men are more than a match for over 40,000 Aiel. This is a significant fact -- Aiel are probably the fiercest, toughest warriors in the world. If we were to assume that every non-channeling warrior on the good side was gridlocked in battle with one Shaido, and that every channeler was battling one Shaido channeler, the odds at Dumai's Wells at the arrival of the Asha'man would still be as follows:

160 spear fighters and about 1 Wise One for every one Asha'man.

The results: all 40,000 Aiel KIA, WIA, or taken prisoner (made gai'shain), and only 9 Asha'man KIA.

Granted, some of the casualties on the Shaido side were caused by Aes Sedai, wolves, Two Rivers men, Mayeners, Younglings, and non-Shaido Aiel, but the Asha'man were the decisive element in this fight, and Rand al'Thor surely would have died without their intervention. It was a remarkable way to put the capability of the Black Tower into perspective.

Edited to use Marie's new spoiler tag

ASIDE FROM DUMAI'S WELLS, the cleansing was totally awesome, esp. liked Cadsuane directing their swath of destruction with her ter'angreals, and the first man-woman circles in thousands of years.

But I do love the fights, esp. the following battles, in no particular order:

Alivia vs. Cyndane (Cyndane = pwn3d)

Rand & Moridin vs. Sammael

Moiraine vs. anyone (Moiraine's fights are always quick and usually overkill, which is cool)

Logain vs. Toveine Gazal & Company (Reds = oh so pwn3d)

Mat vs. Couladin

Mat vs. Gawyn & Galad

Aram vs. The Shaido Aiel

But perhaps the coolest non-Power fight evar was the battle royale between Eamon Valda and Galad Damodred. I was cheering Galad on while I was reading!
