Help With Some WoT Facts

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, first post ^ ^

I've just discovered the world of WoT fan fiction and I'm totally fixated by it. I'm currently reading book four, The Rising Shadow (I know, I'm a late starter!), and have been enthralled by Moiraine since the start. I read some fan fics about her which were great, but I noticed most of them involving her and Siuan (with the exception of one or two) were either slightly depressing, eg. ended sadly, or didn't have much sex rolleyes.gif

Being a long-time reader of fan fiction, I have finally decided to "put pen to paper" and contribute my own take on things. However, as I'm only on book 4 of the series, I'll probably need to ask a few questions to ensure I don't make any glaring mistakes in regards to lore, personalities etc.

It's also been a while since I read the first book, so without re-reading the whole thing searching for answers which might not even be there, I thought I'd ask you knowledgeable people :P

Additionally, my story will cover some of the time the women spend training in the White Tower. I'm aware there is a prequel to the series, which I will get around to reading after I have finished all the other books, so I will probably need to ask a few things about that period, as the first part of my story is mainly based then.

But my first question is: How long were the periods of time that Moiraine was away from the tower searching for Rand? Was it one long search for 20 years, or did Moiraine return regularly?

I am pretty sure its not outright stated if Moiraine returned to the tower during those years, but she seemed to be familiar with a couple of aes sedai not of her agegroup so it is a possibility, atleast after Siuan became Amyrlin.

That's wonderful, thanks guys :o

No doubt I'll have more questions before I'm done. The first part of the fan fiction should be complete by the end of next week hopefully, sooner if I have my way.

Unrelated, but does anyone know where the the image I picked for my avatar comes from? And where I can see a larger version? Can't quite make out all the text :P

Welcome to Moiraine's World, Caster! Hopefully the collective insanity won't drive you away.

As for your question, the image comes from the New Spring (the WoT prequel novel about Moiraine and Lan twenty years before the start of the series) comic book that was never actually finished. The issues they did finish have some very nice artwork, though. The text on that one says, "These are the nights that can't come back." (I think; we'd have to double-check with whoever made the avatar.)

Sorry for the double post, but another enquiry if I may?

Do people generally prefer Fan Fics in sections, released with breaks in between, or would it be best to post the whole thing, or even in two parts? I'm at around 2000 words, and at a reasonable place in the story to stop, but I don't want to lose the momentum of the tale. I think the entire story is going to be over 10,000 words.

I'm asking, because I generally prefer the whole story in one go. It frustrates me to find a good bit of fan fiction that is to be continued, and then have to wait for the next instalment. But I notice this is quite a common practice, so maybe I'm in a minority.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

I think 2000 words can be deceptively little, depending on the stories full length. I mean one could write 2000 words about somebody trying to decide between two hats to wear if one tried hard enough. *Cough* Robert Jordan *cough*

I STRONGLY recommend you read New Spring. It's only like 300 pages (if that). A breeze compared to the others. A delightful one at that. But it gives an immense amount on back story on Moiraine. (not really as much on Lan). Anyway, I read it in between The Dragon Reborn and The Shadow Rising... it made Moiraine more complex and heart breaking at times. And of course, always super awesome!

Anywho kudos for penning the paper. And welcome to the forum of mystery, of enchantment, and the finest merchandise this side of the river Jordan! On sale today.

....HA! I just linked Robert JORDAN to a Disney film. Oh the GLEE!

*And suddenly he disappeared!*

:P

Thanks for the input, I'm nearing the end of book four, so I'll be sure to read New Spring before starting the next one, if I can stand the suspense!

I added a bit more to the section I'd written, I'm at about 2800 words now and just about to start one of the main scenes. Think I'll just make it a one shot, is that the correct term? :o

*Shrugs* well I don't object to the term anyway. So go for it! Ah, Shadow Rising was my favorite. The next one is mighty good too. Such a long series. I recently finished the last printed one. After Lord of Chaos they struggle a bit pacing wise. They become a bit tedious but they all still deliver. Except Cross Roads of Twilight. Not much actually advanced there.

I read the first book in that series and I couldn't stand all the deus ex machina. Richard was just blatantly Gary Stu. Does that get better in the later books?

:P I had to look up "deus ex machina" and "Gary Stu", but giggled to myself when I discovered their meanings.

Yes, I think Terry Goodind has even said Richard is the man he wishes he could be. But even so, I can't help liking the character. The love affair between him & Kahlan is also very compelling. I must admit, Richard's character does get a bit too much at times. I don't think he even contemplates doing one evil thing in the whole series. But I overlooked that small issue :o

And by the way...

If only they'd do the same for the WoT series :(
