Blood and bloody ashes! So now in CoS not only has Thom been described as leathery, ugly, gnarled, and left out in the sun too long, but now he's just been described as scrawny! Scrawny!! Why, RJ, why????? This has dashed all my hopes that he was at least robust despite his age! After all didn't he knife some Myddral back in EotW? Didnt he hook up with that young girl Deena? There was evidence he was robust but now its being undone. Why did RJ do this? It's killing whatever potential the Thom/Mo pairing had, not to mention the insertion of Thom's scrawniness into the Tylin scene (with you know who) really dampened the humor!

 

I don't understand this. Now I just feel sorry for Moiraine. I will blame Lan. No, I will blame Moiraine herself! Lan was a hunk! She could've manipulated, seduced, and made him fall in love with her (bc we know she can do that to anyone) but she didn't! And I'm sure she's encountered other hunks. But she waited until all the options ran out and everyone else hooked up! And now instead of a hunk she gets someone old and scrawny! RJ couldve at least made Thom into an old hunk like Gareth. Why oh why is he making Thom so unattractive for the most attractive person in the whole series? *sighs dejectedly*

I've always consoled myself with that fact. Whenever I see Mo/Thom in the books I jut think "he'll be dead in a decade or two, and so will Gareth Bryne, so Mo and Siuan can then live happily ever after for centuries together". I've convinced myself that Moiraine and Siuan will get a happy ending together - they're just going to have to wait a little longer for it than the other pairings in the series

You know, there are a number of reasons why on a logical level this doesn't make sense. We'll call them Cons.

1. he is very old, not only will she outlive but he'll barely live much longer so she'll be a widow before she can even say "geriatrics".

2. apparently he is ugly/unattractive. Mo is the hot porcelain doll. she knows she could have her pick amongst men. she would go for someone on her level, i think.

3. Thom could not also serve the dual function of being her Warder. if Mo did get another Warder theyd for sure have to be not involved, and that guy would be feeling her regular interactions with Thom. Mo is secretive and modest so i think she would prefer not to be in the situation where shes married to one guy and bonded to another. he'd be like some sort of weird third wheel.

4. Thom does not trust Aes Sedai, so there now we have trust issues already.

5. he killed her half-brother

6. he was her sister in law's lover

7. hes a musician and Moiraine does not care for music and cares even less for musicians (ref NS)

8. they're both manipulative. theyd drive each other bonkers with marital daes daemar.

9. oh yea and hes scrawny! mo needs a hunk! i demand it!

Pros

1. he saved her so she's attracted to him for that (?)

2. perhaps in the terangreal she learned that if she didnt marry him something else really bad would happen and so she's circumventing worse outcomes for herself

3. she doesn't think anyone else would ever marry her and she really wants to get married, so i guess someone is better than no one

4. morgase told her thom is really good in bed

 

thats all i could churn out! i still really like Thom though. and Mo. i'm just keep feeling this pairing less and less.

Sadly, yes it is for real. Gareth is one of many WoT males who beats his love interest. Even more sad is that fact that Siuan puts up with it; she specifically mentions (in TPoD I think?) that she could use the Power to defend herself but chooses not to for retarded reasons.

I'd be inclined to think the same thing, but then I also would never have thought strong, gruff, indepedent Siuan would allow herself to be hit. Shows how RJ screws up his characters when it comes to their relationships.

Whoa! Good thing I'm doing a reread now... I definitely forgot all about this incident. Though I think I'm vaguely remembering it now... I'm very guilty of skimming the last few books. Maybe Siuan's just that starved for attention after not having a love interest in the tower for so long?... and a side effect of her losing her "balls" after being stilled.
