  1. Well I kind of ignored the forum for a bit out of guilt of not finishing book six reread. And then when I don't post for awhile I feel guilty over that and hide in shame.

Then I try and get Kate or Nik to spam the place for my own amusement.

    Also, time for new Random.

  2. In book six Thom tells Mat Aes Sedai don't hide as much as they think they do, while spinning Moiraine's letter in his hands. This was before he read it. So she must have made some sign of interest, although "interest" =/= "I love you" just "hmm, you are interesting :>"

    That letter....that letter!

I think she likes Thom and might even enjoy his company (and maybe she's heard whispers about his ability in the bedroom) but that letter!

I don't know what to think about them after reading that thing; honestly I would have said her being lovey-dovey would be out of character except that thing was so borderline I don't know what to think of Moiraine anymore.

  3. I'm actually not making any real value judgments on Moiraine's sex life or lack thereof. I have no clue if she's had one night stands or not, and don't really care.

However, in giving my opinion in this thread I based it on two things mostly:

    1) She has said that she has never held Lan's heart and that she has never seen Lan as an object to get jealous of. We could argue until the sky is green, but it would be pretty hard to come up with any actual evidence of them being lovers when there is plenty to suggest otherwise.

    2) Something Tarna Aes Sedai said (thought really) in book 11 that sheds some light on Aes Sedai sex practices (and she's Red Ajah!).

Outside of Laura, and maybe Kaitlin, I have yet to met a WoT fan who thought Tarna's reflections were worth discussing because, well, a whole lot of other important things happened in that book. Including drunk Elaida.

I think this is the problem. From our (the forum's) perspective it comes across as you simply making inferences based on what you want to see, whereas everyone else is trying to draw on something from the books that specifically refers to these kinds of behaviors. But those incidents are mostly regulated in the later books and only pillow friend obsessed fans seem to even care to remember them.

The biggest mistake is comparing them to the West's value system. Instead, if you could just give some quotes to back up your theory, it might be easier to see where you are coming from. The downside is that I am not sure I myself could show my own evidence without going into spoiler territory.

  4. See, I think there's a difference between being aggressive and having one night stands. Like, I think a woman can be aggressive and extremely erotic *smiles* but that doesn't equate with being very loose/liberal about who her partners are. I always saw this as being one of the benefits of having a Warder for the Aes Sedai. They usually don't marry, but they're still women and obviously have needs, so what better than to "bond" some studly man so you and knock boots with im in addition to having him watch your back?

my God i think that was the most scandalous post I've ever made. i need to go try wash this blush off my face. i know how Cairhienin women feel. *splashes cool water on cheeks*

But see you are placing our value system ontop of them. By your logic, Moiraine does have a liberal view of sex, otherwise she wouldn't have slept with Siuan. But in Randland such things aren't considered "liberal" just...normal. That isn't to say some don't think people should wait until marriage or have one steady partner, but in the grand scheme of things sex politics in WoT isn't like it is for us. This, again, becomes more obvious with the series.

Not to mention the basic fact that 1) Moiraine is a nomad 2) she is clearly not a virgin 3) her and Lan aren't lovers. Unless you are Green, chances are you and your Warder aren't getting it on. So that kind of limits the chances for a steady boyfriend and increases the chances of just a fling.

But she definitely got tense when she thought he was going to do it. She didn't mind him wanting to, but I think she would mind him actually doing it. :(

You are leaving out the situation, though. She didn't want him seeing her unless it was on her terms.

It's kind of hard to expand more since you haven't finished the series yet. But I think you'll find there's a reason those of us who have are poking holes in your argument.

  5. I think for Aes Sedai one night stands are a matter of necessity.

There are minor (although as the series goes on it is hard to say who is minor and major at times) characters that show it isn't really all that unusal for women to be um, aggressive. Not really a term I'd use in this situation, though.

Moiraine flirted with Ryne well enough, and didn't mind him wanting to see her naked, just him telling other people. So Moiraine wouldn't really have an issue with a one night stand, just everyone else knowing she had had sex. But then Cairhienin don't like people knowing they have sex with their own husbands.
