  1. Had a busy day; didn't have time to sit down and enjoy some fanfic. Don't freak out if it takes Moiraine's Worlders a while to post responses. The World posts as the World wills. :faint:

Hehe, I liked Lan staring down the guys who leered at Moiraine. I do hope Moiraine manages to get herself out of this tangle like her usual strong self, rather than some silly damsel in distress. Do keep writing :P

  2. Ooh this book is where we meet Evil!Lesbian Galina, amirite? I giggled at the scene with her and Erian near the end after they kidnap Rand. Galina thinks how pretty Erian is and hits on her, offering to bring Erian to her tent for some "blueberry tea", but Erian says she doesn't want any "blueberry tea", so Galina goes back to her own tent to "drink that blueberry tea by herself".

... I can't be the only person who thinks "blueberry tea" was a euphemism. :faint: And didn't Galina also hit on Tarna in the backstory (unsuccessfully). Not that I blame her; Tarna was hot in her two-panel NS comics appearance.

  3. By the way! How the heck does Merean know they're "pillow friends"? Remember when she tells Cadsuane that? How in the world

I don't think it was a big secret that they were a couple. ;D Merean seemed pretty unimpressed when she found them nekkid together in Siuan's bed after a night of Elaida's rough punishments (ooh that sounded dirty). The other Accepted act like they know it too. Besides, I don't think they would have felt the need to hide it; pillow-friendships are seen as normal (if short-term) for novices/Accepted, and several Aes Sedai are even pretty frank about which asses they used to tap (that hilarious Elaida scene in KoD comes to mind). Moiraine knew everyone knew about her and Siuan, but she got so upset at Merean for actually talking directly about it to Cadsuane. Notice that she says, IIRC, "There were things done in public that were talked about, and things done in private that were definitely not talked about" - she's not ashamed that they knew she was with a woman; she's embarrassed because her sex life - gay or straight - is the topic of discussion.

And I agree that Moiraine and Siuan aren't "real" lesbians, because hey, this was written by RJ. The same guy who writes about women being spanked by their husbands, and powerful women being put on leashes and forced to do menial labor. The same dude who thinks almost every relationship should involve the male being older, taller, and more sexually experienced. His "gay" characters are only lesbians for a short time, they want men in the long run. Pretty much the only "real" lesbian couple we see much of are

Galina, who is evil, and Therava, who is also evil (and a dominatrix).

[Mild spoiler for the latter half of the series.]

And nice catch, Brynefan! I never would have spotted that! I wonder if that was intentional of RJ.

  4. Moiraine's World is pretty heavily in favor of Moi/Siuan historically so be prepared to get eaten alive. There is a reason I am in hiding!

I definitely didn't intend to come off as foaming-at-the-mouth hostile at any mention of pairings other than Moiraine/Siuan. If you guys like Moiraine/Thom or Moiraine/Lan or Siuan/Bryne, then go for it! To each her own.

And yeah, I agree that RJ has made them both stupid in regards to how they deal with the men they somehow love. WoT isn't exactly gay-friendly, or even feminist-friendly. But I still keep the dream alive for Moiraine/Siuan, no matter how unlikely! :(

  5. i always got the impression that Mo's relationship with Suian was more like a built-up sex tension releasing itself because they're all teenage and twenty-something girls stuck together in the tower for years with no men (sort of like prison, but not really! :()

It was much more than just that. Moiraine and Siuan did not have merely a sexual relationship, but a deep emotional connection. They comfort each other when saddened or frightened, wrap each other in their arms after a long period apart, give a kiss of reassurance and playful tickles, sleep in each others' beds when they have nightmares, team up for pranks and the resulting punishments, tease and confide in each other, and do little things like share tea without asking or make sure the other woman has a warm fire to come back to on a cold night. They spent six years learning together and practically living together, and when the time came they even chose to take their Oaths together. Moiraine even says that she has never been as close to anyone as to Siuan, or loved anyone as much. They truly loved each other. More than just best friends, more than just "lack of men".

  6. that's also a very valid interpretation. perhaps i'm trying to force my desire for Mo and Lan to get together into the book. i still think it could be possible though and not entirely ruled out (not that you were doing that). :(

by the way my name is Olivia too and is usually my name on forums. i always get confused when i see your name because i think its me! lol.

Wow, hello, Other-Olivia! :( It's a great name, is it not? It'd be a real coincidence if your middle name is also Ursula like me.

And I can't blame you for wanting to see your favorite pairing follow through. I myself still hold out hope that Moiraine and Siuan will get back together once their crusty old men die off. :(

  7. Interesting theory!

I had a different interpretation of that scene though. I think Moiraine and Lan were involved in the fighting, which is why Rand thinks "Of course. The clamor of fighting was dying down in the hills below." They didn't come up to see Rand until they had finished off the Darkfriends. The reason Moiraine is so disheveled and underdressed is because she was woken up in the middle of the night and didn't waste time getting dressed before going out to fight. And there are several instances in the books of Lan either sleeping fully dressed with his sword by his side or just staying up really late keeping watch. I think Moiraine blushed because she was all messy and wearing only a robe in front of all those ppl; her prudishness didn't kick in until after the danger was dealt with, which is also why she is so eager to leave again.

I think Moiraine's reason for not coming sooner is that she knows she is going to "die" soon, so she wants Rand to learn to handle things himself and not need her (like she says), and she figured Rand wouldn't have a hard time handling a couple Draghkar like he did at Cold Rocks. Lan's reason for looking troubled is that he does not know Moiraine's reasoning; she hasn't told him that she is going to "die" (because she knows he'd do something stupid and get himself killed trying to prevent it) so he wonders why she is acting the way she is and also keeping secrets from him, her companion of so many years.

  8. I confess I picture all the males with hairless chests. There was a scene that said something about Rand's chest hair and I was horrified.

Ew, yeah. And one scene (I think when he's with Myrelle) where Lan's chest is described as "lightly-furred" or some such. Made me gag. And Cadsuane''s line about Rand's "hairless buttocks", I was like uh, would you rather see hairy buttocks, you crazy old lady? Maybe it's because I only like women, so seeing men with chest/armpit/leg/facial hair is off-putting.

  9. Thanks for the link, Kaitlin! And I agree, Tosh. They've Disneyfied it. No kiss-slapping, no Lira ear-biting, and Bukama stays with the two of them at the table rather than going off with Racelle and coming back later all rumpled up like in the book.

Plus, what the hell is going on in the top panel of page 3? o.O That guy looks like some ancient Greek mystic offering up a sacrifice to Zeus or something.

  10. Welcome, Liverella!

I agree that it would be a really cool idea to have a "Moiraine Collection", but unfortunately I don't think it will happen. :) However, Moiraine's World does have a little list of sections from Moiraine's point of view, so that's a start which could help you in re-locating your favorite parts. (My own copy of New Spring is much worn from constantly being flipped to the parts I really like, and several of my main series copies have a bunch of dog-eared pages where Moiraine shows up :o) If you get around to buying the paperbacks, I'd recommend doing the same, or if you don't want to damage the books then keep a little running tab on which pages/chapters you like so that you can go back to them when you re-read.

  11. I just love when she shows signs of being Moiraine Jr (please don't kill me, Olivia).

Why would I kill you? I don't have any particular beef with Nynaeve (other than her 'tarded relationship with Lan). Moiraine definitely left a deep impression on Nynaeve, whether the latter likes it or not. Moiraine was the very first Aes Sedai she met (hell, probably the first truly manipulative person she met), so it's not surprising that when Nynaeve tries to be vague, manipulative, or just plain Aes Sedai-ish, Moiraine is the person she patterns herself after.

(Or did you just mention my name to get a response out of me, since the puppy comes when her name is called?)

I think it doesn't make sense that Graendal killed Asmo just in that he seemed too weirdly surprised.

Heh, Graendal is still my vote for who killed him, if only for that one line that stuck out at me in early TFoH. IIRC, Asmo says something like, "I picked up a saying in Arad Doman" ...Graendal is in Arad Doman. And Lanfear says to Asmo, "If I hadn't hauled you out of your hole, you'd still be waiting to snatch a few scraps." I think he was kinda hiding in Graendal's shadow (or maybe she knew he was there and kept him around for some reason, maybe so they could team up against other Forsaken if the need arose) and then when Graendal came to Caemlyn to sniff out Rahvin's secret stash of angreal/ter'angreal like she did when Sammael died, she decided Asmo had outlived his usefulness.

I actually said to RJ when he signed my books (in really shy, fangirl way) that I thought Graendal was the killer and he gave his typical vague response. xD

  12. Well, I was a young teen rather than a child when I saw the series, but Xena: Warrior Princess was definitely one of my first crushes. I feel bad for all the little girls today who have role models like Britney Spears, Bella Swan, or Hannah Montana. Xena was beautiful, strong, honorable, intelligent, and independent. Lucy Lawless still makes my chest flutter to this day, whatever role I see her in.

And, of course, Moiraine Sedai. :( So powerful and mysterious. And I've come to really like the way she was drawn in the comics.

  13. Thanks for the link, Caster! Baby Eggy is cute! Not sure about the style of the other chars, though. Still, at least they are finally getting around to finishing the comics.

  14. Strawberry Panic episode 1.

And I'm pleased to find one of my fav. voice actors (Nakahara, Mai) plays Nagisa.

What a coincidence. I started rewatching that series for the 3rd time a few days ago. :D And if you like Nakahara Mai you should watch Mai-HiME, where she's the main character again (It's my favorite anime! Although it's an entirely different genre from Strawberry Panic.).
