Theatrical Channeling

The other day while it was dead at work I was thinking about Moiraine and her bragging to Thom about her precious, billowy fog to trick the draghkar and realized channeling just doesn't seem as dramatic as it once did. Oh sure, plenty of giant balefire bombs and explosions but no real finesse. I mean, giant Moiraine stepping over the wall...that was entertainment! I haven't been engaged in a channeling scene since the climax of Winter's Heart.

Magic tends to inflate quickly in fantasy. It starts out with some trick to prove that magic is real like lighting a candle and it is all amazing but at the end of the tenth book everyone has magic and uses it to race continents for fun.

We're kind of like Rand in that way. Moiraine and channeling were AMAZING to him in Eye of the World. Even the smallest things. Then as time went on he took it for granted, and so do we.

Or maybe Moiraine was born to be the wife of a court bard and therefore gives her weaves an extra flourish!

Channeling has become rather 'meh' in the series. I'm more excited about the Dragons than the Dragon.

I think there are some channeling scenes that still make it seem amazing, like the

seanchan's attack on the white tower.

But I agree that channeling has become rather 'meh.'
