Breaking the Oaths

Recommended Posts

The Aes Sedai are constantly breaking their oaths. In The Great Hunt, chapter 18 - "To the White Tower" Siuan makes a sword out of air. A weapon with which a man can kill another man. There were no men in the room, but that is just splitting hairs.

"Made from the air, child, with Air. It's as good as most steel blades, better than most..." - Siuan Sanche.

She was definitely still bound to the oaths, since she thought of how she got rid of them when she was stilled.

The thing with Siuan is she didn't intend to use it as a weapon. It's a loophole, really. Aes Sedai can't lie, but they can say "I'm as stuffed as a pig!" even though technically they aren't literally stuffed like a pig. It's all about intent. :P

But she shouldn't be able to make a sword at all. It's a weapon made to kill people.

I think that it's just one of those mistakes authors tend to make and I can't blame the poor man. I'm having trouble remembering MY stories. I would have to make a huge database with all characters with all the info if I went over a hundred pages. Then I could randomise who whould show up where based on the likelihood. How dull would that be?

So, I'm just after moments where an Aes Sedai theoretically broke one of the three oaths. It doesn't have to mean anything. It's just for fun.

A non channeler COULD use a sword like that if the flows were cut off. Like I said, it's splitting hairs. Aes Sedai are good at that.

It's probably a waste of time and energy to make an Air sword, and no non-channeler could take it from Siuan, but my point is the type of weapon. A sword is a sword, even if you intend to slice bread with it.

I could get into a thread like this. All Aes Sedai are murderous corrupt liars out to take away all of the fun in the world and replace it with their fetch and carry games.

I probably wouldn't bounce more than a Green on my knee more than twice.
