Episode 6 - No Such Thing

Sobs continued to rack Rand's body no matter how hard he tried to control them. His only solace was the sound of Asmodean's crying: clearly he was not the only cry-baby.

In one of his rare moments of clarity Rand was able to realize that having a duel with the One Power was pretty stupid. It was even more stupid to have said duel on Tar Valon owned land. A fleet of Aes Sedai with Egwene at the helm had swept down on them and prevented them from fulfilling their idiotic--yet manly--duty.

He and the Forsaken and been dragged down to The Chair of Remorse, and although he couldn't be sure Rand thought perhaps their torture at the hands of these women might have actually been illegal. They questioned him about his private affairs, about what Moiraine was up to--something even *she* didn't know!, and about the secret to Elayne's weight loss. They didn't even bother with the pretense of interrogating Asmodean, and when Rand quietly mentioned perhaps they might want to execute a Forsaken they stared him down and said: All the Forsaken are dead. Stop talking crazy. Would you like to go back to the Chair? No, no he wouldn't, thank you.

And so now he sat naked and alone with a crying Forsaken-turned-gleeman. And it was pitch black in the cell. He did not like the dark.

Rand stood and followed the sounds of Asmodean's whining. "Quit your bellyaching!" Dealing a swift kick at the man, Rand discovered Asmodean was fully clothed. He suddenly felt a little violated.

"This is all your fault, Dragon. If you had just left me alone to my own devices we wouldn't be stuck down here in the cold and dark!"

"At least you have clothes!"

"Great Lord take my soul, you're naked?" Asmodean let out a loud grunt when his attempt to run from Rand lead him straight into a wall. Rand couldn't help feeling offended.

Turning his back on Asmodean, or at least where he thought Asmodean was, Rand carefully returned to his own corner and tried to find a comfortable way to sit. It was only a matter of time before Cadsuane came to his rescue; he just needed to wait.

It was only by luck and cunning and a hidden sa'angreal that Moiraine had been able to shield Elayne so thoroughly. She poked and prodded at it but it was impossible for her to see how to unwind the damned thing. Moiraine had said she'd have all the time in the world to figure it out and Elayne very much feared that midget had meant that literally.

She and Raul had been given what had been Nynaeve's quarters all those moons ago, which was to say it was little better than a hut by Elayne's standards. Raul spent his time pacing back and forth and simpering, but there was no way she was going to let him out around all those village women: everyone knew how countrywomen behaved when the farmers were away.

Elayne herself had attempted to walk amongst the people, even if she was surrounded by Cairhienin "guards", but no one seemed to want to be bothered with her. Not even lowering her bodice half an inch helped. Most seemed to think it was her fault that "Manetheren" was now sharing borders with Cairhien and became very angry when she pointed out that Manetheren was long dead and the Two Rivers was still very much a part of Andor.

Thus she now sat alone with Raul plotting her revenge on the world.

Moiraine idly sipped some blueberry tea and watched her daughter waddle after one of the palace cats, while Siuan babbled about useless gossip beside her. Her thoughts were elsewhere, however, and were mostly concerned about Matrim. He had been excited the previous night for reasons unknown to her, and knowing Matrim that was never a good thing. Although she had to admit him being excited had some good side effects.

"Moiraine, why are you blushing?" Siuan's voice might have sounded concerned but those blue eyes were accusing.

"I...I was just thinking of...of...the making of.... Tamra! Don't eat those weeds!" Rushing over to pick up the child, Moiraine made a great fuss of wiping the girl's mouth of imaginary grass. Tamra and the cat stared at her with unamused expressions.

Moiraine could sense them before they entered the garden, but she was still taken aback by the appearance of Romanda with a horde of Aes Sedai at her back. Romanda gave Moiraine a once over before sweeping over to slap Siuan. As if an afterthought, she slapped her across the other cheek.

"Siuan Sanche," Romanda's high soprano voice sounded almost giddy. "You are hereby under arrest for escaping your penance. The White Tower will show no mercy." Oh yes, the Yellow certainly was giddy.

Siuan's eye went wider and wider and she let out a low wail when a shield was slammed into her. Moiraine tried to blend in with the flowers.

Romanda flung her hand behind her, pointing at a tall rose bush. "I know you are hiding there, Elaida. If you try and run away now, I assure you that you will be serving your penance under my direct supervision. I wouldn't like to have to do that, which means you would like it even less." Without waiting for a response, Romanda burned the rose bush to ashes, exposing a crouching Elaida.

Moiraine worked up the courage to protest the destruction of her private garden, but quickly grew quiet under Romanda's stare. Well, it wasn't as if flowers couldn't be replanted, after all. Even so, she glared at Seaine Herimon who seemed to be trying to steal the cat.

Giving Moiraine one firm sniff, Romanda grabbed Siuan and a now sobbing Elaida by the ear and lead them out of the garden to the accompaniment of Tamra's giggles and claps.

Mat danced a jig as he walked down the corridor. The palace was aflame with the news of Aes Sedai descending on Siuan and Elaida. Siuan was out of his hair!

The good mood and dancing ended abruptly as he came face-to-face with Lan. Not that Lan did anything, but all Lan had to do was look at you to make you want to run to your mama.

"Out of my way, Lan." Mat tried to make his voice sound commanding. He didn't think it would work on Lan, and he was proved right. The man just continued to stand there staring at him. Going around wasn't working either: Lan just moved to block his path. "Lan! Please, let me pass!"

Lan narrowed his eyes. "I heard Romanda Sedai received a little help in discovering Siuan and Elaida. Do you have any thoughts on that?"

How could Lan know? He couldn't! He was bluffing! "No, Lan, I try to pay as little attention to Aes Sedai as I can."

"Is that so? Perhaps that is why Moiraine...well never mind what Moiraine does." And with that, the Warder left Mat alone with mouth agape.

Maybe it was time to order a different kind of service from Cadsuane.

Cadsuane was a little surprised by Romanda's mysterious entrance and flourish filled exit. She briefly wondered how long before Siuan and Elaida escaped again. No hope either child would gain intellect at this point. They didn't concern her at the moment.

Rand had been gone for awhile, so she had thought it was past time to check on Asmodean. Only, the man wasn't where he was suppose to be and the bond was pointing her in a direction she didn't much like. His lover--some slip of girl trying to make a living as a street artist--confirmed that he had traveled north. Cadsuane herself Traveled close enough to Tar Valon to confirm he was in the city and none too happy.

Rumors suggested, and discreet inquires confirmed, that Rand was also in the city. Doing what no one knew, only that he was there. Rand and Asmodean together was not a good combination under any circumstance, and Cadsuane decided it might be best to just leave them alone in Tar Valon for the time being.

The plan had been to stay in the outer villages and then return to Cairhien before anyone in the city knew she had came. Except, when she went to her rooms at the local inn she found Egwene al'Vere sitting primly on edge of the bed. All of Cadsuane's life experience told her this could not end well.

As if reading her thoughts, Egwene smiled.

Episode Seven - People are Fragile Things

"Daughter," Egwene tried to put as much contempt in the word as she could muster. "May I ask why you have not visited the Tower proper? Not to mention, why in the world are you asking after Rand?"

Cadsuane folded her arms beneath her breasts and said nothing; a silent imitation of Nynaeve.

"Well then. If you will not answer-"

"Did you use the Chair?"

Out of all the inane things Egwene had expected out of the elder Aes Sedai's mouth, that was the last. No one outside of the Hall knew of Rand and that stupid gleeman being taken into custody. If a Sitter was gossiping where Cadsuane could hear she'd do things to them only Romanda could think of! "Daughter-"

"You did, didn't you?" Cadsuane made grand show of biting her lip. "I can't fault you, not exactly, but if you have a known Forsaken under guard why not just kill him? And why torture--I'm sorry, question--Rand along with him? He is an idiot, yes, and he has nine or ten bastards, true, but he *did* save the world once. Maybe twice. Surely you, oh great Amyrlin, can spare some mercy for him?"

Now even Cadsuane was claiming that gleeman was a Forsaken...! "Cadsuane-"

"You look a little shocked. What was it? The fact that you didn't know you held a mass murderer in your hands? Or the fact that I know you are stupid?"

"Now you listen here, you-!"

Cadsuane rolled her eyes. "No, I will not listen. Now, as to your question about why I didn't come to the Tower, well, I simply don't like being there. It's very boring unless you have a pillow friend, and if you haven't noticed, I'm a Green and we tend to need a different sort of "friend". And," a deep, possibly overly dramatic sigh, "I must admit Rand can be a friend on occasion. Be that as it may, if you'll excuse me, Mother, I have some important matters to attend to. Ta-ta!"

And with that, Cadsuane exited.

When Romanda returned to Tar Valon she had expected the girl Amyrlin to be grateful for bringing back the runaways. Instead, al'Vere flew into a rage and gave Romanda a penance. Oh, it wasn't an official penance, no, but being put in charge of Elaida and Siuan planting turnips in Emond's Field sure felt like one.

If that wasn't the worst of it she had to share the village with Elayne Trakand and her twins, not to mention some twillhead named Raul. He looked at her bosom in a far too interested manner, although sometimes she did breathe in more deeply than needed while he watched.

However Romanda quickly discovered that Elayne could be an ally. She had no real desire to go after Moiraine, but then, Moiraine had brought Egwene al'Vere out of this backwater hole so one could argue everything bad that had happened in Romanda's life could be placed at Moiraine's feet.

Elaida and Siuan tried to runaway, of course, but between her and Elayne they never got far and received more beatings than a pie crust. Elayne seemed to get some strange enjoyment out of hitting people. Romanda found she didn't mind Raul's company so much when he was away from Elayne, and he did have a wonderful way of brewing blueberry tea. He was quite masterful with his hands.

But even with new friends, Romanda knew the days were going to stretch on and on for her.

Nynaeve stalked back to her rooms in a fury: Egwene had tried to make it seem that she had hidden Asmodean's true identity from the Tower! Never you mind that she had been saying all along who he really was, and of course let us ignore that Egwene had called her a fool for it! And those rumors from Cairhien...!

Upon entering the sitting room Nynaeve was greeted by the presence of Thom. Why couldn't he just go home?

"I don't really have a home, Nynaeve."

Blast it! She was thinking out-loud again. "Thom, how did you get in here? Never mind, I don't really care. Just leave me alone for now."

Of course he didn't leave. Why would anyway listen to Nynaeve? "I was wondering what you thought about those rumors coming from Cairhien? Please don't look at me like that! This is very sad news for me if true."

"Sad for you?" Nynaeve wanted to slap him! In fact, she did on pure principle. "You are not married to Moiraine, Thom. Who cares who she sleeps with as long as it isn't my husband! But Lan would never do that. So stop fretting."

"But she is pretty. Beautiful, really. Gorgeous, when you get right down to it."

"Will you please shut up?"

After a slight coughing fit Thom continued his tirade. "But let us assume it is true: what are we going to do about it? Besides killing her, that is."

Well there went her first idea. "I don't know, Thom. I suppose we'll just have to go to Cairhien and get to the bottom of it."

Moiraine was acting strange. Stranger than usual. She had sent Mat out to buy "freshly picked strawberries" five times in one week, and each time he had to bribe an Aes Sedai for Travel. Moiraine claimed she wasn't able to do it herself, although she never explained why. The previous night she had devoured two chickens and lamb and then had the audacity to look at his plate!

A slap on his calf followed by "Papa!" announced his daughter. Only eighteen months old and he could already tell Tamra was going to be taller than Moiraine. He'd never tell her that, though. Picking up the child Mat suddenly realized the answer to why Moiraine was acting odd.

+=+

Moiraine strongly suspected that the rumors about her and Lan had originated in the west, although that seemed a little too crafty for Elayne. She wouldn't have paid much mind to them, except Lan seemed to be encouraging Matrim to believe them! Considering her delicate disposition at the moment, this could only lead to a bad situation.

Thom got slapped. I don't feel a lot better about Elayne in the books but I didn't feel bad for Thom in camwalt either.

I feel bad for Nynaeve

Two chickens and lamb!

She has the appetite of her hubby

Tamra is tall
