Moiraine and Siuan's future friendship

At the end of The Gathering Storm I can recall thinking to myself "they can't be friends anymore".

 

Now I know that when she comes back her and Siuan will have some happy-sappy reunion because everyone loves happy endings, blah blah blah.

 

But let us look past that for just a moment.

 

First off, even in comparing NS Moiraine/Siuan to TGH Moiraine/Siuan there is a distance in their level of friendship. This seems a bit more pronounced on Moiraine's end. Yet, I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, it seems Siuan is the one who doesn't really show the same level of affection as Moiraine does her toward the end. They might be old friends who love each other, but they are not BFF anymore.

 

But things are different now. They were once equals in One Power strength, and I honestly can't see Moiraine ending up at that same level. If she was stilled she'll probably be Healed by a male channeler (I don't think she was stilled, but whatever). So now you'd have Moiraine above Siuan in rank. Siuan is also a disgraced Amyrlin, pains me to say it but she is, and Moiraine is a damn legend. She found the Dragon Reborn, killed Forsaken, came back from death.

 

Then there is Bryne. I'm sorry, but I think Thom/Moiraine are a more dynamic couple; they are the kind of couple who'd see fancy art movies and eat nasty foreign cheeses and have exclusive cocktail parties. Bryne/Siuan? Uh, yeah, they're probably going to go back to his manor and have babies until he dies and she...does whatever this new weak sap Siuan does.

 

Maybe it is an issue with Sanderson's characterization, but I just cannot see Moiraine being buddy-buddy with new Siuan. Myrelle? Yes. Nynaeve? After a few drinks. But Siuan? From a distance.

I agree with this assessment of Thom/Moiraine. xD

 

 

Pre-Stilled and Post-Stilled Siuan are like two different people, but even Pre-Stilled Siuan was pretty far removed from Moiraine in terms of their experiences. Even that wouldn't have necessarily doomed their close, romantic friendship... but I just don't get the impression that Siuan feels as strongly as she used to. Moiraine seems somewhat wiser than Siuan as well. (in some ways *ahems*)

 

It would be more realistic in terms of characterization if Moiraine and Siuan are awkward with each other in the meetup of the next book rather than being super mushy and happy.

Niklas doesn't love Siuan in love. It made her go all teeny girl. So I figure that if Moiraine comes back in Thom's arms, Siuan will sucker up to get all the details. And Moiraine will also be in love and all teeny and be more than happy to give them.

 

So it'll probably be all,

Moiraine: And then we kissed, right there. And the sun was still up!

Siuan: OMGOMGOMG *teeny cling* you are so daring!

Moiraine: And he almost used his tongue!

Siuan: *teeny faints*

 

And then they'll be BFF again!

I disagree. I don't expect a massive mushy-mushy, "OMG!" reunion, but I think their mutual experience and the 20 years of having the secret of the Dragon Reborn will bind them together. Perhaps not in BFF style, but they will be friends - or at least have a mutual respect.

 

Am LOVING the Nynaeve/Moiraine dynamic in TGS though...Nynaeve finally admits she was wrong about cursing Moiraine out for arriving in the Two Rivers and taking them all away. Also "I wish Moiraine was here," SQUEE!

I'll admit that when Nynaeve said she wished Moiraine was here, it gave me chills, I think it more just a sign of how uncontrollable Rand was getting than actual fondness for Moiraine.

 

As for Siuan and Moiraine, I can't see a mushy reunion, but I do think they could go back to being close friends, if only because they have both given so much to the same cause. While yes I do think they are both different people now than what they were, I think they would both still want and try to maintain their friendship.

I never said they wouldn't be friends, well ok I guess I did but I know that is unrealistic. I simply mean they won't be the same kind of friends.

 

I also think them not spending time together would help them maintain their relationship in an odd way.

Niklas never read anything Sanderson wrote...except something lengthly on his blog. Anyhow, considering earlier WoT, I think it is based on excuses for things to happen, rather than reason. Which means predicting what is going to happen is impossible. Whatever the writer wants to happen will happen, and gaps of logic are filled with...filling. Fantasy is very filling. Like whipped cream and chocolate cake with flowery marzipan ornaments.

There was a ridiculous amount of Moiraine foreshadowing in this book. More mentions of her in this one volume, I think, than in the rest of the books since 'The Fires of Heaven'.

Is MW in a lesbian or hetero phase right now? Looking at the fanfic I'd say hetero, but we have been traditionally propillow friends.

 

I think Siuan has become an idiot to the highest degree and if her and Moiraine would have just met today on the street I doubt Moi would have been besties with her.

I used to love Siuan, but I can't help but think that post-Siuan is out of character for who I was led to believe she is.

 

Whether it's possible that Siuan and Moiraine can still be good friends...I think time and distance have done damage and all this new 'Moiraine being higher in status' stuff will make it a bit awkward.

 

Meh, I just had this thought of young Moiraine and Siuan being told the fate of their relationship...
