How exactly does Moiraine have herself introduced under an alias? Wouldn't saying her name was something other than Moiraine violate one of the Oaths?

 

Does she have Lan do it? Or does the Oath Rod make exceptions for such things? I was under the belief it was very literal in the Oaths taken on it.

Momo (and other AS who use aliases) usually just go with "You may call me Alys/Eadwina/Lady Shawl-Sniffer/etc." Saying "My name is Alys" would violate the First Oath, but I guess she could just say "I am Lady Alys", since after all, she is the person known as Lady Alys, and no one else is Lady Alys. Or she could just have Lan do it, like you said.

Usually she either goes "You may call me..." or Lan does the talking. She couldn't say "My name is Alys" because that would be a lie, but letting people call you whatever is a loophole.

If Lan introduces her as Lady Alys then she could say, "Call me Alys." I'm not sure she'd be able to swing, "I am Lady Alys." by the Oaths. That's a pretty specific statement for her to make.

When she introduces herself to Lan, doesn't she say, "You may call me Alys."? Easily said and not technically a lie, whereas "I am Alys." is a direct statement and a lie.
