I disagree. I find WoT a lot more refreashing than LotR. In LotR women played almost no role at all, so at least WoT gives us that.

Me either, but let us dream.

I was talking about the three girls. I think Taringail was old enough to not care about any of his sisters.
-
If Cad survives I hope Egwene forces her to to remove the oaths so she'll be younger again.
-
I imagine they would have been close in age...well, two of them. Meaning the oldest two would have been close and the youngest two, but the youngest and the eldest were probably just far enough apart for them to not have much in common.

I want Rand to die. But I don't think he will. If he can't die, I wish one of the girls would, because fluffy happy endings are boring.
I don't want Moiraine to die, yet I wouldn't be surprised if she did. The same with Cadsuane.
Perrin/Mat are going to make it in all likelihood.

In Phoenix and Tucson you can get a job, get a license, and go shopping all in Spanish.
I was in Mexico City for seven days and the only English I heard was song by Madonna on the bus' radio (all the tourists were French for some reason - must have been a sale).
And for the last time, Niklas, in America it is each persons own responsibility to get a job matching their skills. Yes, we have issues with race, but so does every other country on the planet. However, it is a stereotype that our taxi drivers don't speak English. In every cab I've been in, it was usually a white wo/man driving with fluent English skills.
But of course if you don't speak English you are not going to be able to apply to every job. I looked it up: There are jobs in Sweden only citizens can apply for. Hmm, I wonder why? But this is America and we are evil and it's a lot more fun to point out our faults then to admit that maybe, just maybe, we have a right to ask our citizens and would-be citizens to speak the common tongue.
-
No, no, no, no, no. I know English. English is the language of America. It's not my job to make sure people speak English, it's theirs. If they don't understand English speakers they shouldn't get a job that requires them to.
-
And yet there have been times where they can't understand "I'd like a number one please" So your logic doesn't work. I don't care if they don't speak it 100% right, hell I don't myself, or have an accent. Why do I care about that? But for the love of god learn passing english like every other culture has had to.
-
OK...so what is the solution? Let them speak Spanish in America and make US citizens learn Spanish so the new guys don't feel left out? No one is saying they have to learn a new language in a year or two. But there are people in Arizona who have been here for 40+ years who can't speak English well enough to have a phone conversation with the bill collector. I am not being melodramatic: My father's girlfriend's mother has been here for decades and needs her daughter to deal with everything, because she doesn't speak the language.
I'm not kidding: What do you want? I keep hearing about respecting other cultures, open your mind to new languages, etc, but not a single solution about how to handle people who don't speak a country's language. I'm sorry, but I don't think I should learn a new language just to order a hamburger at Burger King.

When is it mentioned she is lesbian? *eagerly looks for the page*
Never! That's why I'm disappointed no one challenged me.

I learned to subtitle!
-
I don't think it's wrong to want to speak it, but it seems like it's wrong for Americans to want people to learn English in America.
-
I'm a bit disappointed no one is arguing over Anvaere's lesbianism.

It's ok. It usually takes me two pages of back and forth to finally spit out what I actually mean.

In many countries things are translated in English for us! It is a double standard.
What is translated? If it's tourist crap that doesn't count, because that's not what we voted on in Arizona. We're talking government produced material. If we say that in order to be a citizan of the US you need to learn English, then translate everything into Spanish, why do they need to learn English? Why should my education suffer (which it did) because we need to teach kids to speak English? They need to learn it, yes, but you shouldn't force native speakers to sit with them and relearn seven years of schooling.
English is the language of business and money. Simple as that. America is the world power right now, and our defacto language is English. Before us, it was Great Britian and their defacto language was/is English. Also, the English went all over the world forcing their language on the natives, so in those places you'll see English still being used. French is spoken in parts in Africa for this same reason.
I plan on having my children learn at least two foreign languages because it's a good thing, and it widens their minds. But learning a foreign language just so you can get a job at McDonald's in your home country, is stupid.
Maybe this is a West Coast hot topic, but it is damn right crazy how every year it seems like we're being absorbed back into Mexico. It's also about respect for America. Why is it ok to point out all our faults and forgive other countries? If I moved to France my ass better learn French. If I move to Japan I ain't eating unless I can speak Japanese. But if people want to keep speaking their native tongues in the United States of America it's a-okay?
Don't mean to sound heated (I'm not), but the world you painted, Kate, isn't very feasible. There are some people who know 5-7 languages, but that isn't an easy (or cheap) thing to give every child of the USA.

Oh cupkate...you are so clearly not from the West.
The fact that Spanish is so prevalent is exactly why we voted to make English official.
The bilingual programs in Arizona have failed. People are not learning English, and truthfully, have little need to. All government forms are in Spanish and in schools with a bilingual program the kids are taught in Spanish. I was in the classes with Spanish speaking kids in seventh grade and it was horrid. To this day I refuse to learn Spanish because if I moved to Mexico, could I get away with speaking English? No. It's a waste of taxpayer money to print things in Spanish and English. This measure that passed now puts the job of translating on those who don't speak English.
I find that fair. If someone moved here from Japan or France they would have to learn the langauge and wouldn't expect things to be printed in their mother tongue. I don't think Spanish speakers should be singled out as special. Wow I sound like a Bush.

I'm sorry I suck so badly at getting my meanings across....
I think it's a matter of semantics. For example:
People made religion to control their societies for the better, and morals were made to stop what was considered harmful to society. That implies religion predated people inventing morals and rules for the betterment of society. In other words, religion is the reason we don't kill or steal, etc. My point was, religion was made to give a reason for why those rules and morals existed in the first place.
-
But where does religion get its morals from? Clearly humans figured out what is right and wrong on their own before they discovered god(s). Religion is just a convenient way to explain why certain things are right and wrong.
Primitive humans didn't have a society as complex as ours, but it was still a society after a fashion. They managed to raise their young to be productive members of the clan/pack, and godless humans still manage it. Religion is all well and good, but it isn't the main reason we as humans are the way we are. Religion didn't shape us, we shaped religion and that's a big difference even if it doesn't seem like it.

Nope. America doesn't have an official language. Neither does Japan! The world is full of surprises.
Dems seem to have won the House. Yes!
I love my birth state (Cali) but they banned gay marriage.
And rejected funding alt fuels.
-
Oh no! I'm for it. I would be unhappy if the ban went through.
-
Everything isn't in yet, but so far English is the official language of Arizona. I'm happy about that.
But right now the banning of gay marriage is neck-and-neck. If that goes through I will not be happy.

Neither was LotR! And really, at this point is anything going to be groundbreaking? Pretty much everything has been done before, it's just a matter if you can do it better than it was done before.
