Moiraine/Thom

I think saying "Moiraine is Carhienin" is a bit of a cop out to explain a poorly developed romance. Yes the Carhienin are typically reserved but considering the amount of time Mo and Thom spent together the relationship seems to be founded on about three conversations, not that thats unusual in WoT.

 

I still think Moiraine proposed because she figured life is short and the last battle is coming.

It's only a cop out taken by itself. When combined with the other circumstances I think it helps to explain things well.

 

They had 29 days in the same general vicinity. I highly doubt they had three conversations in all of that time. On 7 of those days they spent 24 hours together. Let's call those 7 days 112 waking hours if they had 8 hours of sleep every night (and they didn't). There were a lot of other people around but that's not a horribly short amount of time to get to know someone.

 

Imagine you're at college and you share two classes with someone and you develop a crush on them. That's 2 hours a day 3 days per week. That's the equivalent of 4.7 months. Let's say it's work. You're on the same shift as the person 7.5 hours a day 5 hours a week within 5 yards of them. That's three weeks. Definitely long enough to get to know someone fairly well. This is all not counting the 19 days they both spent in the Stone of Tear. I know they weren't hanging out but they definitely would have had contact.

People in WoT seem to think Cairhienin are anything but chaste when behind closed doors. Including Morgase who was married to one.

 

I mean, how much time alone did they spend together? I am happy they are together, but I was always of the belief they would, you know, spend time together post rescue and build up to marriage.

 

Thom...well, it's Thom. He seems to have spent his whole life being a bit of a romantic and he's old enough to want to settle down now, I suppose. If one can "settle down" with a Damodred/Aes Sedai. Moiraine I figure feels the press of time.

Thom has been old enough to want to settle down for the past couple of decades, I just figured he was the George Clooney of WoT.

 

Maybe because most of their time spent together was running for their lives the relationship felt more intensive .

The ten days on the way to Shadar Logoth involved running for their lives with a bunch of teenagers, I doubt they would have been able to spend much time getting to know one another. The ninteen days in Tear they might have been able to get to know one another, but it still seems like a fairly flimsy basis for marriage.

Maybe I'm just cynical because almost every relationship seems to be based either on a prophecy/Min's viewing (suggesting a distinct lack of choice), or two characters meet and fall in love two pages later.

I think you're probably right... *sigh* If we didn't already have PoVs from Min, I'd be tempted to think she's just a troll who makes her "viewings" up for shits and giggles, just to see the crazy things she can make people do if they're convinced it's fate.

yeah Min probably told her. She did say to the wonder girls she knew the face of her husband and Elayne noted Moiraine wasn't as unfeeling about the whole deal as she tried to pretend.

With Moiraine and Thom it seems like you have to infer that there was a lot more there than what the readers are directly privy to via the PoVs of the boys.

 

I've come to realize that RJ gave us a lot more info about the other characters around them the more the boys and their worldview matured.

 

And, yeah, in intense life threatening situations the feelings get more intense? I can buy that. That all being said this is RJ we are talking about. The man was all about getting people hooked up right away.
