Randland accents

Well, despite the widespread use of "gotten" and "toward" (as opposed to "got" and "towards", I mean ) in WoT, I have trouble imagining all the people speaking in American accents, so I got thinking...

 

How do people in Randland speak?

 

Moiraine: I can't figure out and it really bother me!

Lan: precised, clipped Scandinavian

Caddy: for some reason, English schoolmarm!

Mat: Aussie! (Well, everyone from the Two Rivers should have one kind of accent, I guess; but I can't imagine Rand or Nynaeve speaking in Strine!)

The Aiel: Mid-Eastern

Domani: Indian (south)

In March of 2000, Paul Ward received a letter from RJ in which he listed what some of the regional accents of Randland sound like:

 

* Two Rivers - Irish/English

* Illianers - Dutch

* Aiel - somewhat Slavic

* Tairen - Spanish

* Domani - Indian

* Saldaean - Egyptian/North African

* Seanchan - Texas

I imagine Cairhienin are Frenchy.

And I still don't know about the Borderlands! (At least I was right about the Domani!)

Hmm, domani like south indians may be,... but cairhienians definetely french and andormen quite british,..... the two-rivers people probably talk like Irish.

If they have Texas accents, and you're very much Californian/Valley Girl sounding, how do you sound like a Seanchan?

I don't always sound that way though. Ask my dad or even Grandma: I sometimes talk more Southern than my relatives in MS.

But Southern and Texan are still pretty different.

Texas is Texas. And it's more the midwest-south. I don't think of Texas accents as being Southern accents.

I guess it depends on which part of Texas you're in. My cousin from Texas sounds no different than my MS cousins. Besides, I think RJ means the slower speech compared to the Brits, and how vowels are said. Truthfully, it seems to non-American we all sound alike.
