Btw, didn't Fenris get tied up by some red ribbon, since no chain was strong enough to hold him? And him breaking free heralds the end of the world? I could be totally wrong, I don't know much about Norse mythology.

The gods had the dwarves fashion something that could hold Fenrir. They crafted what appeared to be a silken ribbon, it was made of the sound of a cats footfall, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, bear's sinews, fish's breath and a birds spittle. The dwarves also fashioned Thors hammer, belt and gloves.

Hmm, I knew about the two wolves that chase the sun and moon, but most of the rest I hadn't heard before. Norse mythology sure is fascinating! I think I remember hearing about all the components to Fenrir's chains, since it took so long to make since none of those items actually exist :teach: Oh, and the goddess Hel had a rotten and decayed lower half of her body but a healthy upper half, right? And then Loki turned into a mare and had sex with a stallion and gave birth to an eight-legged horse (sleipnir)? o.O And you're right, they sound pretty badass, Thor especially, what with their lightning hammers and all. :( Thanks for sharing, Tosh! You'd make a good gleeman :ghug:

There's some Norse mythology in WoT too that I recall. Mat, in particular; Odin was hung from a tree as a price for knowledge, and his two pet ravens Muninn and Huginn, memory and thought, match the two ravens on Mat's ashandarei, plus the scripted "Thought is the arrow of time. Memory never fades". (or at least, off the top of my head that's what it was). And I think there was something about Odin giving up an eye? And it became the sun.

According to one myth Odni had to throw one of his eyes into the well of Mimer (a sage) in order to be be granted the gift of wisdom.

And in anothe rmyth he hanged himself from a cosmic ash tree to be able to learn the secret runes.

Wow. I haven't read that much mythology, but from what I did take the time to get through I came to the conclusion that I really like Loki :(. He knows what it's like to give birth, and for a mare it's worse than for any other animal. All the women, except Thor's wife, seemed to enjoy spending time with him too.

As if he didn't suffer enough, the gods tied him to a rock with his own son's guts and put a snake in the ceiling, dripping venom into his eyes. That's malicious.

Loki once cut off Sif's hair! Though to be fair he later helped replace itwith hair made of gold crafted by the dwarves, he also got Odin a spear that never misses. But still, thats just rude.

Not only that it was his sister (turned into a wolf by Odin) that killed him. :(

The brother that is.

And when he writhes in pain from the venom, it causes earthquakes.

So many interesting different mythologies surrounding earthquakes, like Atlas rolling his shoulders, tortoises butting against each other, gods writhing. Much more interesting than tectonic plates shifting and grinding against each other. (ahem...these are tectonic plates we are talking about :P )

And thanks, Brynefan! :)

I just got a bit inspired by some Manowar songs and read a few chapters in a book I borrowed at the local library. It was a long time ago and perhaps that author was a bad storyteller.
