Eh, Not as exciting as it sounds, I'm afraid to say. Red Eagle has been trying to get this off the ground for several years. (If I'm not mistaken, they had a hand in the comic series as well... and we all know how that's doing)

They may (eventually) pull it together... but sadly I think the only medium we can safely rejoice in is the video game world. It could live there. There's enough room.

As far as films... it would do better as an epic HBO series or something in that vein. That would give it the time it needs to grow all the plot threads and build characters. Trying to do a half ass film with books stuffed into one or even three films.

LOTR's is a 1000 page book. And that's the whole saga. It lived perfectly as three films. WOT would need a book a film... ALA Harry Potter. Just reading that article made me shake my head a little... that the guy running part of it said (we'll make more if they make money) No.... the guy at the helm needs to have the conviction of a Peter Jackson. If the series is well done, it WILL make money.

The other fear (to my mind) is the series changes it's fantastical focus after LOC. It goes from being High Fantasy Adventure Stories to more of a Political Thriller. That would be an important consideration as a director.

I think they could pull off the 1st three books in three movies. (that would rock)

But the amount of story gets pretty nuts from there on. A TV series could carry that. A film might. But it could also be a heart-breaking train wreck.

Hoping for the former.

Yeah, Red Eagle has been saying they want to do things like this since the comic was starting.

Red Eagle games is planning to release its titles on all major platforms: the consoles, personal computers, handhelds and wireless devices.

That plus doing a series a movies seems like a lot on their plate. If they did all that I wouldn't expect much quality, though I'd love to be wrong. :ddd:

If it was well done a tv series seems like the best visual medium for wot, but getting them to focus on the characters and stories instead of setting and magic system might be too much to ask for. Ideally I'd love to see it on HBO, since they give their shows a little more freedom.

I don't just want HBO for the Aes Sedai testing scenes! *deny*

I think they would, especially now that they've sort of reintroduced the TV world to the genre of fantasy with "Legend of the Seeker." I don't know if any of you have heard about it, but it's based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth books. A lot of people have been complaining about how it's not nearly as good as the books, but what movie or TV series can possibly compare to a phenomenal book series? Anyway, I happen to love Legend of the Seeker. It helps bring audiences to the fantasy genre by mixing it with a fair amount of romance and action to keep people entertained.

I think that they could pull of a larger, more epic fantasy series based on Wheel of Time if they put it on TV. Though I'd be satisfied with movies too. I know they could never compare to the books, not by a long-shot, but I would love watching the movies too. But maybe that's just me.

It would be impossible to include a lot of the storyline except for just the basics really, so my expectations wouldn't be that high. I think I would like the movies for what they are, as long as Moiraine is included muchly. :ddd:

I haven't seen it, Joelle, but I think you're right in that wot could be good, and there's an audience now that's used to it a little more. The SoT one sounds interesting.

I've seen it! I read the whole Sword of Truth series (the last book came out about a year ago) and loved it, so when I heard about the TV series, I was thrilled. At first glimpse, I was a little disappointed, however, it's only 3 episodes in so far and I'm now hooked! They've changed small things about the story, but the main characters are there and they've remained the same. If they did something like this with WoT it would be amazing.

SoT was the next series I was going to read.

I do think if they approached WoT in a TV series they'd be more likely to be able to do it justice. I imagine some plot threads would be axed (with Balefire) but as long as the main characters are on hand a represented... yeah it would probably be good.

Yeah, but even some characters wouldn't be greatly missed.

That reminds me. Hurin, an awesome little character who stuck to Rand like glue in TGH. Disappears at the begining of TDR. That always annoyed me that he never came back. He was just a plucky fun loyal dude who helped Rand a lot before his emperor of the world days. Ode to the forgotten.

I don't remember Hurin...is that the guy who could smell violence?

Edit: Something that always bummed me, or I wish there was more on. Were the portal stones.

I always thought it would interesting for more exploring/traveling to be done with them to other worlds.

Yes Hurin was a good character. If hes going to be making a return it is probably going to be working with Egwene, smelling out the Black Ajah or doing something similar in Andor with Elayne.

I'm still concerned that they are choosing to make an MMO. Even if they do manage to make a decent game graphics wise etc. I really don't see how they are going to make the classes work to the fan's satisfaction.
