[Split]A burqa is not a niqab!

Recommended Posts

@ Jan yes that's true about Urdu/Hindi. I also figured that since demographically speaking your close to Afghanistan the lingo would probably carry over. Different countries have different terms, but since Islam is a religion based on the classical Arabic language, the universal terms are the Arabic ones.

@ Katie, i had to look up what "kyriarchy" means! :( Overall I really like the US, and I say that as a Muslim. Aside from the neo-cons, people are pretty chill about their Muslim neighbors :D The right wing amuses me now more than anything since Obama took the presidency. listening to the neo-con radio is like listening to a wild animal giving its loudest moans (socialism!!!!!) in the final throes of death. although i don't think they will die any time soon. sort of like a super-sonic Myddral that just got chopped. :D

Afghanistan and the Taliban is a complex situation. I don't agree with everything the Taliban does. That being said, I don't agree with just about anything the Northern Alliance does (pre-Taliban tribal rule). The Taliban (which means "students") formed to stop the NA from corruption and crime, like high drug traffiking of opium and unchecked abuse and rape of women. The Taliban tried to implement Islamic law in place of tribal rule, but at the end of the day they are uneducated (not their fault), so said "Islamic" law has become a huge problem, b/c they're meshing culture/tribal customs with it in an attempt to "do their best." They do have a lot of prejudiced attitudes toward women which results in these laws being warped (like enforcement of burqa and the fact that it actually covers the eyes!). Unfortunately the US I believe is supporting the NA because the US's main concern is rooting out Muslim terrorists for its own interests, but I would really hate to know what giving money and power to the NA has done for the little guy (or girl) on the streets of Afghanistan. It's like being stuck between a rock and a hard place, but at the end of the day I think the Taliban will continue to have a strong-hold on the Afghan people b/c the US supported the Taliban when it was good for them (against the Russians) and then the killers/rapists/drug lords (against AL Qaeda), so we're all about self-interest from their perspective. There was also more safety when the Taliban took over. I think if most people knew all this they would wonder how in the world Bush thought he could sell us the story that people in these situations would give the US open arms for bringing them "freedom." Things are better since O is in office but so much damage has been done and I honestly don't know the specifics of his stance toward the NA. He's kept everything he's doing pretty quiet but he has been more fair-minded toward Muslims when it comes to foreign policy.

As far as hijab/jilbab/niqab goes personally (and for most people I chill with which are the conservative born-in-America Muslims) I have always covered out of choice. Most of them were actually given a hard time by their families, b/c covering was not the cultural norm for immigrant parents. The reason I cover is because the Qur'an commands modest behavior between genders, and it has guidelines/rules for each gender as to how that modesty should be implemented, and for a woman this includes covering and wearing loose clothing when in front of non-related males/not-husband after she has "developed". There are many things I believe God has commanded me to do, 99.9% of which are unrelated to dress, and for me to fulfill His commands is a right my Creator has over me. Thus I also do other things like pray five times a day, fast the month of Ramadan (wont be this time tho cause of preggy-ness:(), be polite/courteous to others, be fair between my children, be good to and help my family, wash my husbands feet and then bathe in the water (haha! so just kidding!!! :)) and other stuff. Muslim women's dress has come to the forefront of the discussion on Islam b/c women's dress is an issue that is predominant in our own culture since women's lib, but in reality in our religion its a secondary tenet. For me I just view the way I dress as one of many things I believe I should so because God wants me to. Thus I always did it and it was never related to any man. Although I do find logical benefits in it as well as spiritual.

All that being said I don't judge other people, even Muslims, who don't do it. Nor do I hate or even feel any animosity to non-Muslims who dress however they want. Everyone is living their own life and has a right to make their own choices and believe whatever they want.

My that is the longest post I've ever made on here aside from fanfic! (By the way part 7 is ready. will put it up soon :D)

LOL. Tosh it's so not humping! It's licking its foot! That sword smiley is named Marie (coincidence?) so I'm thinking these smiley-names have a touch of her creativity....Marie? :(

by the way, is that smiley on this thread yawning? *taps foot*

No, it's not meant to be yawny for this thread.

The humpy smiley looks pretty humpy to me!

I don't think this thread is the place for me to get into my religion, because it's not about dominant or more accepted religions for whites. But, I will say that I came from an extremely conservative background and I am familiar with many of the spiritual undertones you were talking about, Liv. Maybe not coming from me always. :( I always questioned a lot. So anyway, I hear you and respect your right to wear what you choose. I believe in choice in a lot of things but not anti-choice.

So, I don't support women being in oppressive situations. Some women have been pretty vocal at the risk of extreme violence about not wanting to wear burqa or abide by damaging rules based on extremist religion, but they've had to.

I'll continue to be an ally to the women who are in situations like these in what ways they need. They don't have a choice. There are rules now that make it even more dangerous for them. Sometimes I think the problem is not recognizing the difference between religion and cults. I think people can get badly hurt being in organizations that prey on their sense of belief and innocent spirituality. It makes me furious. Edit: Hmm, I read this over. I don't want it to seem like I'm saying certain religions like Christianity are exempt. Hopefully it didn't come across that way. I was thinking of the Taliban's take on the Quran, Neo-Con Christianity and Scientology as examples. And all Rachel Ray cooking shows here. O.O

I do hope things continue to get better with Obama. Reagan and the Bushes did a lot of damage thinking they could endorse and control extremists. But then, they represent their own extreme and very privileged views. It is really no wonder.

That smilie was taken from deviantart; the person who made it originally made it to depict humping. That other smilie isn't named "marie" (I think it's ninja or something) it's just the code that makes it show up on the forum. In the past we had a "laura" and a "nancy". So yeah, sorry but that's a humping smilie.

licking a foot is gross (and perhaps pervy) but at least it went with my joke! the hump is just too blatant to be tasteful! :(

im having a hard time understanding Nancy. it looks the most pervy of all....

Licking a foot is more pervy than humping, I say! For many have humped but not all are into foot licking.

Personally speaking... nope, never come across a foot licker... even though... hmm... *sneaky grin* ... maybe this is not the forum for it. :wha:
