TGS Chapter One!

Does anyone else get the feeling that

TV is going to get destroyed?

Quote:

“How did the questioning go, Cadsuane Sedai?” he asked in a more moderate tone.

She smiled to herself. “Well enough.”

“Well enough?” Nynaeve snapped. She had made no promises to Cadsuane about civility. “That woman is infuriating!”

Cadsuane sipped her wine. “I wonder what else one could expect from one of the Forsaken, child. She has had a great deal of time to practice being . . . infuriating.”

“Rand, that . . . creature is a stone,” Nynaeve said, turning to him. “She’s yielded barely a single useful sentence despite days of questioning! All she does is explain how inferior and backward we are, with the occasional aside that she’s eventually going to kill us all.” Nynaeve reached up to her long, single braid—but stopped herself short of tugging on it. She was getting better about that. Rand wondered why she bothered, considering how obvious her temper was.

“For all the girl’s dramatic talk,” Cadsuane said, nodding to Nynaeve, “she has a reasonable grasp on the situation. Phaw!"

I <3 Semi so much and also Cadsuane. Min has already gotten on my nerves. Rand is the Doof of doofs. Yay, Nyn is back from traveling around.

I felt the way Nynaeve backed up Cadsuane's idea of torture to be a wee bit out of character. This is the girl who was rather light handed when she had a Forsaken on a leash, for crying out loud, not to mention became disquieted when she fully realized her husband and Rand were going to go kill some Darkfriends. Maybe it was the timing of the sentence or something that made me feel that way, I don't know.

That whole wind sequence was a bit too long for me and just strange to read because it was very much all Sanderson, although once we got to Rand it felt more WoTish except for a few awkward descriptions.

I am very happy to read Cad go "Phaw!" I might even buckle down and actually get the prologue early this time around.

Hehe, Sanderson uses "trousers" where I think RJ always said "breeches" (I'm not complaining, just saying it was one of the first things I noticed).

I do hope Graendal shows up, or that captive Semi gets some direct screentime.

Ha! I noticed those small little inconsistancies as well... especially noticeable after coming off a complete reread on the series. My brain is in total RJ mode. It wasn't as jarring as I feared it would be... different but readable.

Too bad the first chapter didn't start with Mat? :D

His style of writing is different and reading something familiar in it felt quite refreshing. :-) In all, I liked it. Was slightly annoyed to find a reference to Rand and his attitudes to women right up front, but -- and call me insensitive and indelicate -- but I giggled when...

he was waving his stump about and trying to do things with it! Oh and when he yells at LTT!

*unhappy*

I didn't really like it! It just reads like fanfiction. I know people complain about RJ's writing style and I know we never expected it to be exactly the same, but I quite liked RJ's descriptions, his flow, his volcabularly. This just seems like a massive step-down. The characters seem to have lost their voice somewhat.

The characters seem to have lost their voice somewhat.

I guess that's inevitable. After all, the scope of WoT is massive, and it'd be near impossible for a different author to just be able to pick it up from where Jordan left off.

RJ was a master writer. His vocabulary and choice was always spot on.... even when it was boring. Boring but never awkward.

I have mixed feelings myself. The descriptions are more stripped down but enjoyable. So a Pro there for Sanderson.

His character interaction was.... how should we say..... uneven. Things weren't as subtle as RJ made them. He loved word play and nuance. His work is riddled with it and the characters shined for it.

Rand and his little bitch fest about Egwene and a NOTCH ON HER BELT....... (Shivers) That was the one thing that felt wrong on every level. Rand would not say that (even if he thought it a possibility.) RJ would never have expressed it in such an infantile fashion.

I'll reserve full thoughts till I read it all. The pace was brisk enough. So we'll see. At least we'll get to see how the story ends. Some of the best stuff was undoubtly written by the man himself. Tarmon Gai'don! (Eventually)
