Top Ten Reasons Twilight is greater than WoT

Recommended Posts

Twilight's actually quite a lot like WoT. Instead of Aes Sedai, there are Vampires, and instead of fighting against evil, they fight for love. Love is pretty much the same in both series, it's unexplainable and sudden with little reasoning. It just happens and the characters have no choice but to make the best of it. But however much they are alike, Twilight has several advantages:

  1. Twilight is much better written. I don't know if “show, don't tell” is a recent guideline for writers or doesn't apply to hardcore fantasy but in WoT, the reader is told what happens, not shown and left to drawn own conclusions.
  2. Rand and his friends are chosen or born with gifts that make them special, instead of becoming special from the way they are characterized. There are special traits in Twilight as well but they aren't powerful enough to define the character.
  3. RJ loves his women. All of them are fantastic. Steph loves some of her boys in the same way but since Twilight is written in first person, it simply makes Bella into boys. If you are gonna do 3rd person, you have to keep the 3rd person distance to the characters.
  4. High ideals making characters act unreasonable is a problem in both series but in Twilight, the emotions behind the high ideals are explained, not just defined as, “No fair hitting girlies”.
  5. And speaking of women and ideals, magic in WoT is split between the sexes. I donno why RJ wrote it like that, but I can only assume he thought boy and girl brains are fundamentally different and that girls are made soft and caring while boys are hard and proud. Twilight was about to do the same thing with only male werewolves but then Leah was added, so Steph's off the hook.
  6. One good thing about WoT are all the different cultures...especially since they are practically defined (and illustrated) by their different acceptance of nudity. But Twilight is set in the real world and neatly describes real places and people, which is even neater.
  7. Wot rambles a whole lot and in the later books thet plot has almost reached a standstill. Twilight keeps its pace up and Bella gets pregnant and has a baby and things progress.
  8. Vampire-ism could translate back to the real world as an addiction to drugs, which are payed for by abusing others through robbery or prostitution or crime. The expression “Blood money” comes to mind. But one dark evil that wants to destroy everything for no real reason doesn't make sense unless you are lots of right-wing and believe beating up homesexuals and such is fighting the devil.
  9. Twilight has real issues with healthy relationships. See http://kar3ning.livejournal.com/545639.html but on the other hand, so does WoT....
  10. And finally, Twilight is sooo much more successful and gets movies and tons and tons of trinkets for fans.

I find Twilight to be a blight on literature. I started reading the first book and couldn't make it, it was so boring. And it only gets worse! Bella brings whole new meaning to the term Mary Sue.

And don't get me started on the birth scene.

I did finish the first book. Somehow. Subsequently, I've tried to lose the book accidentally-on-purpose by leaving it in different places, but people always return it to me. This time I stuck it in my girlfriend's bookshelf. Let's see if she finds it. :ghug:
