The other night when I should have been sleeping it occurred to me thirty years ago Thom was in his 40s. That's cool. And Moiraine/Morgase were 15.

I'm sure Thom is well aware where 15 is considered legal and not.

 

 

And anyways, I know Thom's age has been investigated lots already but I don't think he's that old.

The age of majority is 16 in Andor. And he was twice Morgase (and thus Moiraine's) age 20 years ago.

That math mystery just makes his age even more confusing! I bet his age is trick some on purpose to make it hard to convict him for statutory rape.

Let's say Thom was 70 in the first book. Moiraine was 42.

 

Ok. Well, there is a math problem to help you know if someone is too young. Half your age plus seven.

 

(70/2)+7=42

 

It is so perfect!

 

Edit: But that would mean Nynaeve was 5.5 years too young for Lan.

Thom's age has always confused me, though I think Vertex is right that there's another thread somewhere in the depths of MW where it's already been discussed.

 

When I first pictured Thom I figured ~60, but then there was a line from Basel Gill (somewhere in TDR methinks?) about how Thom was with Morgase 15 years ago and "Thom was in his prime, then". Uh, prime is usually 20s to 30s. I could see a person maybe making a case for 40s, but 55 is certainly not "in his prime", which is what Thom would've been 15 years ago if he's ~70 nowadays. So I r confused. But then, if Gill is right and he was in his 30s 15 years ago, now he'd be ~50, which is not usually old enough to have tons of wrinkles and completely snow-white hair, so... arghbrainhurt.

 

In regards to the thread title, I don't hate Thom. In fact I think he's a total badass, what with his Power-wrought knives and his political sneakiness. I just wanted Moiraine to be with a woman instead.

He might have meant prime just as in he was at the peak of his career success and everything was going good. That, and for men their primes extend more than women's it seems. Besides, Morgase is the one who said Thom was twice her age when they were knocking boots. Not to mention, RJ was probably biased

 

In other words, yes Moiraine is grooving on old man pedo Thom.

I think good old Ishie was described as looking like a man in his prime too. That's probably supposed to be JUST before you start crumbling with age and your hair turns all white xD There sure is an age bias in favor of old men. Meanwhile Min is an "older and experienced woman" compared to the other Randgirls.

 

Siuan wasn't young enough for Bryne with 10 years of difference so she had to look like 25 and half his age... yeah. Shame on RJ. There it's probably just as much for breeding purposes though, which just makes it worse. She'll drown in kids before he dies way before her and gives her that "my warder is gone" depression in the middle of that. How long can Moiraine be with Thom? If he's 70 already... such horrible fates everyone's facing.

I still don't want to believe that Thom is ~70. It just makes it more complicated for all of the reasons everybody already stated. Having some couples in the book with large age differences is one thing, but I can't think of any main female character except Min who's hooked up with a younger guy. RJ, about this bias I am disappoint.
