Licking a foot is more pervy than humping, I say! For many have humped but not all are into foot licking.
This is the one with the Nancy tag cause it seemed like you didn't notice the other named ones.

No, it's not meant to be yawny for this thread.
The humpy smiley looks pretty humpy to me!
I don't think this thread is the place for me to get into my religion, because it's not about dominant or more accepted religions for whites. But, I will say that I came from an extremely conservative background and I am familiar with many of the spiritual undertones you were talking about, Liv. Maybe not coming from me always.
I always questioned a lot. So anyway, I hear you and respect your right to wear what you choose. I believe in choice in a lot of things but not anti-choice. So, I don't support women being in oppressive situations. Some women have been pretty vocal at the risk of extreme violence about not wanting to wear burqa or abide by damaging rules based on extremist religion, but they've had to.
I'll continue to be an ally to the women who are in situations like these in what ways they need. They don't have a choice. There are rules now that make it even more dangerous for them. Sometimes I think the problem is not recognizing the difference between religion and cults. I think people can get badly hurt being in organizations that prey on their sense of belief and innocent spirituality. It makes me furious. Edit: Hmm, I read this over. I don't want it to seem like I'm saying certain religions like Christianity are exempt. Hopefully it didn't come across that way. I was thinking of the Taliban's take on the Quran, Neo-Con Christianity and Scientology as examples. And all Rachel Ray cooking shows here. O.O
I do hope things continue to get better with Obama. Reagan and the Bushes did a lot of damage thinking they could endorse and control extremists. But then, they represent their own extreme and very privileged views. It is really no wonder.

so no one thinks she's a Darkfriend? Mo called out both of them in her letter, and Alviarin turned out to be head of the BA at the Tower. That has me suspicious about Verin in that regard.
That wasn't quite Moiraine's wording. She was implying that Rand should be careful of any Aes Sedai. At that point she had heard about Siuan and Leane being Stilled. There was no one that Moiraine was absolutely sure about left. She most likely included Verin because of the way the Brown insinuated herself in on that talk with Rand in the beginning of book 2.
We have to take Moiraine's suspicions with a grain of salt. She is overly cautious much of the time when it comes to trusting others due to the Black Ajah situation she knew about from the beginning. It is probably what kept her alive, but maybe not always correct. (Although Liandrin... hello xD )
-
They worked with Moiraine more than other Aes Sedai I remember. At least, they were always huddled around her when she used the kesiera to listen in on Rand. Mo was often in the sweat tents with them and other stuff.
I think her attitude of not apologizing for herself and being pretty sensible played a big role in how the Wise Ones viewed her.
Out of all the Aiel I don't mind the older WO. They remind me of Cadsuane.

I'm from the US but don't go actively looking for media from here about... anything actually.
It's all mostly prejudiced crap. What I've seen from the media about Afghanistan has been a kind of token caring about the oppression of women there and then a total dropping of the subject once the news sufficiantly got some people up in arms about it. Then every once in a while the extreme end of right wing politics will use women being in burqas as an excuse to go over and overwhelm a people without actually listening to the women who've been born in that environment and have lived that way all of their lives (kind of like white americans know better than everyone else in the world... and then the west in general as another privileged type).
On the other hand large groups of women from the left will argue that it's right to continue to support oppressing women because it's someone's culture. However, they show their lack of understanding of kyriarchy and their western and/or white privilege too this way. Also not paying attention to the women who have been born in this culture which are the women who understand it best. Also uncool.
It is pretty messed up in the US, it's true.

At least she had him 18 or so years before the oldness that he is now. I don't care if it's cheap, he better be young next books!
I wonder how old Verin is? I thought she was 80+ but in this book wasn't there a clue that she was older?
-
Yes, that is what I meant about Cad too. She's too matter of fact not to have had them. At least her fair share.
I forgot about Seonid. I think RJ just threw those in to make it diverse.
-
I am too lazy to go get the book from my car, so no quotes or names but: a Green who doesn't like men as men?! That shocked me about as much
Tarna sleeping with men. And those men knowing she is Red!
And then of course Perrin making notice that the redheaded Wise One doesn't have that bad of a temper despite her hair color

*folds arms* Some redheads do not have tempers and I say this as a brunette, not a redhead. Moiraine must have spread her prejudice to Perrin. *glare*
Cadsuane doesn't like men either.
Not as much as most Greens. Or is that who you meant?
Olivia, you're right. She's the eldest and Davram's heir as far as I know too.

I like that they're so manipulative and shady. What pains me is when they often can't back it up...
Mmm, this bugs me too.
RJ often confuses everyday manipulation with political machinations. It's not quite the same in all ways. You could argue that a person who is not able to be regularly assertive (any oppressed person) has little choice but to behave in a manipulative way whereas in politics it's often the necessary and best way to behave if you want to get things done.
That's why good ol' boys some people would like to have a beer with don't make good politicians. However, instead of us getting to see AS being really successful at it we see them failing miserably.
It's that whole "setting them up to knock them down" thing.

Yess, Demandred.
I hope he's been up to something good! -
The few like Cadsuane understand and fight for a greater good. Them I enjoy. In some ways I think Verin is the freakiest and by extension coolest manipulator. We STILL don't quiet know her angle. Though she's been very helpful to Rand, even to the extent that she does... questionable things. Can't wait for that thread to tie up.
Me either. Verin is badass.
I was trying to think of a guy who's as awesome as Cad, Verin, or Mo and in a similar way. Asmo, Thom and hmmm... I'm drawing a blank. Thom hasn't being as manipulative and Game of Housey as he's been built up to be. It's not as written about anyway. There's Juilin and his Tarabon escapades.
-
I've seen many women wearing veils here. You don't often see women in burqas but it happens. It's not the most diverse here though. I expect in NY or closer to Philly, which is near where I live, there would be more. But still, lots of people wear head coverings (women and men) for religious or other reasons. We have a lot of Amish here too so there are also buggies and whatnot.
Tosh, was she standing by a window?

*nods* I know what you mean.
Speaking of childish and stupid, what group of educated, tried and tested women would faint all over the place (and vomit everywhere) like these women did during the meeting with Egwene? And those are the group of Aes Sedai RJ supposedly wrote as being the good guys.
He didn't treat any groups anywhere near the same way. How come he did it?
-
Why did RJ make Aes Sedai worse and worse in the series? I want to know why he found it necessary to make them the crap of the channeling world.
There are a lot of examples of them behaving in a whiny and unprofessional way. It doesn't make sense that he would build them up and then show them to be worse than that manager guy in Office Space. He did not go through any tests to prove his steeliness, fortitude, and intelligence. But, these women did.
Also, everyone treats the AS like toejam on toast. I don't like their organization like I like the Kin but still.

I looked on Sanderson's site but it said nothing about worldwide release. Time to look on Tor. *puts on Tor-site navigating hat and heads over*

I was sort of stunned, so I stupidly let it pass. She was utterly mad, and had problems of her own - did eventually report her when she pretended she couldn't understand me because of my accent, however.

Wow, what a way to attack your voice in multiple ways. Nice silencing technique there.
I'm glad you didn't blame yourself after experiencing her brand of crazy. (Maybe at least not long term blaming)@Asmo, Olivia - I agree, this is interesting to read. I like hearing people's thoughts on it. I didn't realize I called Jan "Bug"! Yes, I meant Jan.
@Liv - I'm glad you haven't experienced harassment like that but the problem of having to be with a man for protection can be an issue with chivalry too. If the men who have a problem disrespecting women didn't do it so much there would be no need of a protector. The problem is the people doing the disrespecting, not with you.
(or with you being alone or with a man) After all, we are adults and not children. @Jan - Your nickname slipped out! I still don't know why Vertex wanted to call you it. Did he say? ... Also, cookie

Yes, and Moiraine made lots of choices. She told Lan she was going to keep him alive early on in the books. I tend to think of being a warder or AS as having a vocation. Well, that's wrong according to what the Amyrlin suggested later in the books. It's more like a job now, but early on it seemed more like a calling. What I'm getting at is that it's not really a lifestyle. It's more professional. Moiraine was in the leader in their respective duties, except that we only got to see Lan drawing away from her and their mission from the beginning because of Nynaeve.
In one way Moiraine made decision that determined Lan being alive or dead in the future, but in another way his life is tied into his professional calling anyway. I can't hate Moiraine for doing it without his permission because it was sort of their jobs to behave that way. It's a funny thing being a Warder though. I don't know if I like it! Keeping arrows away from AS's backs is excellent and good, but you have to be a certain kind of individual.

*decides to wing it* Er... global warming and carbon footprints in Randland?
Yes, that sounds right.
Oh dear. I don't have a CLUE who Colvalere is.
She was the older noblewoman in Cairhien that tried to get Rand to sleep with all of the young Cairhien ladies of Colavaere's choosing. She hung herself in her rooms later on due to some Game of Housing gone bad.
I keep having to look up how to spell her name. Those Cairhienin and their many vowels!
edit: I figured out what I wanted to say about chivalry. Don't take it personally, Asmo. I still <3 our Gleeman! This is something that has bugged for a while now though. Hmm, it turned into a long rant so I'll stick spoiler tags around it too.
Asmo, not hurting a woman because women have been traditionally very hurt by men is not the same thing as not acting in self defense because a person, who happens to be a woman, is a murderer who is currently trying to attack your companions and yourself with the intent of murdering everyone (or making you join her and probably murder people).
I believe it's fine not to want to hurt people for the sake of peace. It's not very peaceful to control, though. And a lot of what chivalry did was part and parcel of controlling one half of humans for the benefit of the other half.
What bothers me about chivalry is not that men hold doors open for me sometimes or pull out their chair. Stuff like that. I take it as just a form of politeness no matter what their motivation is. I hold doors, split bills, stand up for people who are being bullied if I can, and other kinds of things sometimes because I was raised to be polite. Sometimes they're women and sometimes they're men. Most often I try to be the most polite toward the elderly or little kids, just cause it seems right to me. What bugs the crap out of me is when men refuse to go through doors that I hold open.
I was talking to Bug about this the other day. We agreed it happens to every woman sometimes. I guess it shows how many ignorant guys there are though! The worst ones are the ones that come over to me and hold the door while I'm holding it, usually in front of me. Sometimes there's a wall behind me so I have to go under their arms. It puts me in a "less-than-him" position because I have to either be trapped against the wall or walk under his arm. Think about a guy doing that to another guy and how awkward it would look. The one walking under would have to get way too close to the other one's body.
Or, if a guy that I date won't let me do things that could "get me hurt". That could be whatever he decides is dangerous. That is the problem. It's effectively treating me like a child instead of a grown ass adult that can change a damn tire on her own. Or fix a leaky faucet. Or put up shelves. Or carry around a friggin hammer. Or whatever.

/end rant!
So that is why the Rand not hurting women due to chivalry thing bugs me!

It does not compute with me either, Tosh. Is it a cruel trick?

I'm glad the unabridged audio book is getting released at the same time. It'd be a pain for hearing impared folk, and everyone who hears English better than reads it, if they couldn't get their wot fix at the same time.
