Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind. Its one of the best books I have ever read .

What about Fablehaven by Brandon Mull? Or the Jacky Faber books...though, those are technically historical fiction. I also like Kim Harrison's Hollows.

 

Then there is more old fashioned fantasy by David Eddings that's not too bad. Or by Robin Hobb, hers are fun. But if you want really boring you could go for the Riftwar saga.

A really good one is The Night Angel

This guy even mentions in his book he loved RJ and you can see a few similarities in his book to WoT (Though the story is completely different and so is the setting). I loved this book, Dark & Gritty is what you'll get. With lots of black humor.

If you want a high fantasy/romance mix with some mystery thrown in, try Elizabeth Haydon. If yoy can get past the "twu wuv"-iness of the romantic bits, it's a good fantasy trilogy.

How about Terry Goodkind's books? Those are good books as well... The Sword of Truth series.

My Kindle should arrive tomorrow morning (yay!) haven't decided which recommendations will get first read yet. Probably not The Eye of Argon Maybe Robin Hobb so Deadsy doesn't haunt me.

Ah yes Goodkind. I started him around the time I started Wheel of Time. I got up to book five and that was that.

How bad is the romance? Like Rand + hos bad or Moiraine + Thom bad?

Bad as in "we love each other so very much we just drool sappiness but there are plot contrivances keeping us apart and there is so much drama that we could solve if we just communicated with each other". Typical romance novel stuff. But not too obnoxious, and the overall fantasy-plot and fantasy-world of the books is good, with good mystery and humor and genuine drama.

Elizabeth Haydon doesn't have all her books on Kindle. I am disappoint.
