I have a feeling Moiraine is like Spock in that regard... the needs of the many blah, blah. For most people, given the choice between saving your friend's life and saving the world, they'd go for the former and think of the world later! Moiraine would actually save the world!

I don't know if she's THAT bad. It wouldn't matter if one of them could channel or not. I, personally, would sacrifice one for many. I feel those who choose one over the world are selfish.

I just hope I'm never depending on you when I really need it!!! I meant that most human beings wouldn't "sacrifice" people they love for the greater good. It's not meant to be judgemental in any way, it's how people instinctively react most of the time out of self-preservation (with self extending to loved ones). Personally, if my best friend is drowing and Mars is about to attack and I can stop it, I'd save him/her first! Maybe we'll both die later, but *shrug*... I wouldn't be able to live with myself saying that I saved the world but let my best friend die.

 

Did that make any sense?!

Well we weren't giving specifics. At least I wasn't. I don't know if Moiraine could sacrifice say, Siuan, for the world. But a nameless stranger? Most humans could do that. And what if your friend asked you to let them die to save the world? We're getting off topic here though.

 

I agree with Trav, it's sexual stereotyping. Moiraine acts even more responsible than Rand does, and yet is seen as less human. I think her letter showed that there's a side to her readers either didn't see before, or didn't want to see.

The reason people sympathize more with Rand is because they can remember that soft, farmboy side of him. They know about all the madness and bullshit from Aes Sedai and Aiel that he has to put up with on a minute-to-minute basis. It takes strength and resolve to do that without beheading those nattering çÜnt$ with a sword of fire every time they get on your case. they empathize with the loss of his real parents, and now his distance from his foster father, and how he doesn't even know how to feel about him.

 

The reason most ppl think Moiraine is a cold-hearted bitch is because she insists on being so secretive, never reveals her true intentions (not even in that pathetic letter), smacks you around with the Power when you don't comply with her whims, teases you sexually, f***s with your dreams at night, and basically doesnt give a damn about your own wishes or opinions.

 

We've never really seen a genuine, down-to-earth style about Moiraine. We have with Rand. A lot.

Also, I don't think it's possible for the Dragon fuggin Reborn to have jumped up ideas about himself. You're talking about the very guy who cleansed saidin, eats Forsaken for breakfast, and can channel stronger than anyone in the world. The man is jumped up. But you're male. I'm female. By default, we're going to be biased. I don't remember Rand ever being soft; I remember an idiot. If I was Moiraine, or Cadsuane, or Amys, I wouldn't give a crap about Rand's opinions either. It's only natural that people are going to look down on those younger than themselves who also lack experience. A lot of what Rand has done is because of his luck and the Pattern.

 

I don't care how many Forsaken he's killed (although Moiraine did that too), that doesn't mean I'm going to respect him. He couldn't cleanse saidin by himself, he needed a female (Nynaeve) to do that.

 

We're never going to agree. I think Moiraine is a strong female, Rand's a fool, and it's as simple as that. The minute I think otherwise is the mintue MW shuts down.

maybe I am biased. but when a majority of readers tend to like rand more than moiraine, you can't tell me that every one of those readers is male.

Whether she's driven Lan crazy is something we'll never know, and is a matter of opinion.

 

No offense, but most male readers seem to hate all Aes Sedai and female characters in general, except Min. And you know, maybe the Rand lovers are just more vocal. I know I don't speak up on Wotmania about my Caddy love.

 

If Moiraine was such a cold ass bitch she wouldn't bother trying to help Rand; after all, those closest to the Dragon have a high chance of getting killed. Yet there she is risking her life for a bunch of fools who want to call her a darkfriend.

 

I think it's time I took leave of this topic; I run a site dedicated to Moiraine so I think that speaks for itself on how I feel about her.

Moiraine is a professional hero in the WoT world,... like James Bond or something. They keep cool while working under pressure but that doesn't mean they have cold hearts.

 

I think deep down Moiraine is still like she was in NewSpring, only she's isn't as green anymore and hides her emotions better.

Sorry for going off topic again just when this one has been split, but I don't agree with more people liking Rand than Moiraine. I know quite a few WOT fans, both online and around me, and NOT ONE likes Rand, whereas all like Moiraine!

 

And while I might think she is a cold ass (arse?!) bitch in many ways, I'm not really complaining because that is exactly why I do like her! I guess she's just coldly and calculatingly fixated on saving the world and to hell with the rest of us - is that such a bad thing? There'd be no future without people like Moiraine.

 

On a personal level, would I like to be friends with someone like her? No, she'd drive me nuts!

Not necessarily, otherwise I would'nt have been here in the first place. I know many others like me who do think that moiraine was(will be) one of main characters in the whole story and liked her for who she was and what she did.

 

But I must say, this thread was a compelling read....
