Moiraine's kin

Recommended Posts

Kailtin and I have been "discussing" the history/fate of Moiraine close relatives. Chielfly her father and sisters.

I personally think Dalresin isn't as good as Moiraine made him out to be. I'm mean, compared to his brothers, yes he was a good guy, but that's not hard. I don't doubt he loved her, but in all likelihood his spoiling her has made her view of him biased.

As far as her sisters, unlike Kate I do not think they are dead. Innloine is likley playing with grandchildren, and Anvaere is with her lesbian lover in south Cairhien.

I don't really think he spoiled her more than the youngest child (and a girl at that!) is usually spoiled. ;)

If anything, he may have remained slightly distant from Moiraine due to his being somewhat of an intellectual, making the times that he spent with her that much more important for a young girl.

He's golden compared to every other Cairhienin noble that has been written about! Except, of course for his female children and wife.

He was an intellectual! They don't mean not to be very hands on, but it happens! Also, the youngest child is often given things they want, but sort of left to their own devices a lot.

Also, I will only agree to Anny being a lesbian if her lover was named Candiswen. :P

I think they were all killed some time around NS. Someone was picking off the Damodreds.

(I'm having a difficult time thinking of words!)

Well you could say moiraines parents saved the world by teaching her daes dae mar. Or you could say they made saving the world much more complicated by doing so. Is daes dae mar the right word? I always confuse far dareis mar and the game of houses.

Far dais Madi? (forgive my spelling!)

The Madiens of the Spear are a far cry from the Game of Houses. So I think your first one is more correct regardless if it is right or not.

I'm with the mass death of Mo's family theory myself. NS led me to believe that mostly because of that 'Mo on Throne' thing.

I can see why you may think moiraine's sisters are dead, but I don't agree, the idea of the damodreds being killed off probably isin't true since we know they were still one of the most influential families in Carhien after new spring so theres clearly alot of them left.

But I do agree that moiraine was probably spoilt:P

Moiraine was considered for the throne because she was going to become Aes Sedai...and her sisters weren't queen material. No one in House Damodred would support them for the throne, so there was no need for any other House to kill them off.

*tucks WoT encyclopedia back into recesses of mind*

I happen to agree with those that think Moiraine's sisters are alive, but personally I think they are unimportant.

I think her sisters aren't even of any huge relevance, they were just created to give Moiraine more of a backround, and don't have much merit for themselves. We don't even meet them, and aside from that one conversation with Jarna Sedai, they are never mentioned in NS. RJ notes (as Marie already mentioned) that neither had suitable personalities for Queen and no one would support them - which puts them neatly out of the future plot of the War of Sucession in Cairhien.

Therefore they have no need to appear in the mainstream WoT plot....but perhaps in the other prequel RJ has said he will write (the one covering Moiraine/Lan's exploits on their way to the Two Rivers) one or more of Moiraine's kin will show themselves.

I wonder how much like each other they all look? Are the similarities between Caraline and Moiraine just a fluke? I mean, of course families look like each other, but it seemed like RJ had the Damodreds all having very much the same features. :P Galad probably looks like a tall man version of the female Damodreds, from how he's described.

They probably look more alike than most families: any noble class of any country has limited options for breeding, unless they want to draw from the peasant stock - which is considered highly distasteful, unless it's only once in a while.

But the Damodreds have been ruling Cairhien for centuries, I think 500 years they maintained power becuase of their control over the Silk Path. (I may be wrong *gasp* on the number of centuries, I can remember the passage that lists it, but not where to find it to check myself. I will do that later.)

So Damodreds have been kings and queens and more liekly to form arranged/political marriages with noble families, and after centuries, this becomes a problem, because all your suitors are related to you in some way. Therefore, cousins are more likely to look alike when they come from a small-branched family tree.

I could be rational and make counterpoints, but that wouldn't be very Nynaeve of me. So.

Not only do all Damodreds look alike, all Cairhien look alike. In fact, they aren't even human but aliens. Big eyed aliens who don't blink enough.

In all seriousness (maybe), I think they just have strong genes. That nose of theirs...that's the type of nose that would take a really long time to get out of the genepool. I also think RJ just wants them to look alike, logic be damned.
