He serves some role in book one at first, none in the second other than to be there, he's with Mat a bit and does some good there, and after that he's just there for the sake of it.

Do you think Thom was always intended to be Moiraine's...uh...boyfriend (doesn't it sound so frivolous when applied to Momo?) right back in book 1 or was it just something RJ threw in later on?

I think he realized he had the hots for Moiraine after several books. But, they really are suited to each other in terms of personality. Both are sneaky, both are unexpectedly cute about certain things. *loves Hoho the Flower*

I wonder if it bothered him if or when he realized it? Maybe he thinks that because he based a lot of characteristics on his wife that it was not so weird.
