Chapter 8

Thom looked at the objects in his lap. When he realised what they were, and what they would mean for him, tears ran down his leathery cheeks, settling into his moustache. They would probably form icicles if he were outside too long.

“Cuendillar based,” Moirane said. “Elayne made these for you. A far better design than Perrin's, with roots in the Age of Legends.”

“Strap them on!” Thom had put on a dignified look and wiped the tears on his sleeve.

A couple of minutes later he was walking, at least half tolerably, supported by a staff. “Well, this is different. I can see over your head again, Moirane.”

Moiraine gave him a hard look and nearly pouted. “Be grateful, old man.”

“So,” Galad said. “What happens now?”

“First the good people here need somewhere to sleep. Preferably not going back in.” Thom was already getting the hang of his new legs, neatly hidden inside the legs of his breeches and the foot shaped ends fit perfectly in his boots.

“Perhaps you could join your friend at the inn?” Galad suggested. The elderly people nodded eagerly, but Byar tugged at his arm.

“My Lord Captain Commander, we cannot afford it!”

“Oh, don't think about that,” Alys said. “We haven't been able to touch our bank accounts in years. Our relatives liked it that way so they would get as much as possible once we were gone.”

“Well, I'm an exception here,” Thom muttered and gave Moiraine a begging look.

“If you insist.”

In the early morning tiny snowflakes powdered the ground and lit up the streets with the first sunlight.

“I think I like snow,” Berelain said to her husband. “It's so white and pure. It hurts you when you first touch it, but it melts easily as long as you don't let go.” She stared at him. “Well?”

“I'm sorry for that time,” Galad murmured.

Berelain smiled. He was so intelligent for a man. “I forgave you last night. You looked – astounding.”

Galad laughed uneasily.

“Oh, she is here!” Faile fingered her belt knife and stared at Berelain, who stood beside the stage while Galad Damodred held a motivation speech.

“Please, Faile,” Perrin sighed. He knew going to Baerlon in the first place was a mistake. “She won't look at me when she has him and you know it.”

“Are you suggesting that I chose an inferior man?”

Here we go. “This will hurt me more than it will hurt you.” He opened the door and threw her off the coach, the Two Rivers was still hopelessly behind with the new technology, into the soft snow by the roadside and told the driver to increase the speed.

Balwer, who was crouching in a corner, gave him a reproachful look over a bunch of papers.

“She'll be back,” Perrin said. After years together Perrin had learnt at least some about how his wife worked.

Running footsteps were heard and a pair of daggers were stabbed through the wood of the door, an angry face peeking in through the window. Perrin ignored it. Not until she had climbed in on her own, dripping snow, did he look at her.

“I missed you, my heart.” Perrin smiled.

Faile shook some ice out of her hair. “Help me get warm.”

“So, you forgive me?” Moiraine wore a blue silk robe as she sat in front of the mirror while a maid helped her with her hair.

Thom was smoking his pipe casually, standing rather than sitting now that he could. “Not yet. You may persuade me tonight, after I make a fortune entertaining on the market. It's immoral to ask something like that of me now when I'm in debt to you.”

The maid did not understand how a statement like that could make Moiraine Sedai smile.

That's all

Power stilts? Those hardly seem comfortable for everyday activities.

Think of how much money he'd make performing! All of the other Gleepeople would cry. ...But I hope he would take them off when Moiraine starts to persuade. :P

:P Oh, Faile.
