The New Spring thread

It certainly would have broken her head. Awe, Nyn! xD

Do you think that if Moiraine found Rand shortly after NS she and Siuan would have realized how dangerous it was for him to stay in the WT? She was still laboring under the assumption that he had to go there in EotW, but I wonder if it would have made a difference for her to actually have him with his ta'vereness. Um, I just got a mental image of Siuan babysitting young Rand and then passing him off to Myrelle when her time was up. Very odd. :D

Were she and Siuan just going to make Baby Dragon public from the start (to the AS)? If not I can realistically see them killing Tam and Kari if they caused them too much trouble. It's harsh but why would an AS need to take a baby? It would bring too much attention down on what Moiraine was doing. Out of the non-BA the Reds at least would figure things out quickly once they learned where he was born, or at least they'd be suspicious. There were rumors about Gitara already, and I don't just mean the ones involving Tamra and one dozen Warders in training. >: D

Anyway, yeah. I forget what they said the actual plan with Baby D was.

I'd quite like it if a RJ's notebooks were published.

In Thom's letter Moiraine said "Heed carefully what I say."   Guess who also says such formal warnings (in face the exact same sentence)? Cadsuane. She told Moiraine that. And Moiraine didn't heed

The plan was to have him under the watchful eye of Aes Sedai, to train him up to be a good leader (and White Tower servant, probably). I don't think they wanted him in the Tower itself growing up, for his own safety, or until they were able to say for certain to everyone "Here is the Dragon!". Some Aes Sedai probably would have been delegated to going out on assignment to where the boy was to "help" raise him.

By that point Moiraine and Siuan were the ones in charge of the whole DR thing as far as they knew. Cadsuane wasn't trusted by Mo at that point, and though Verin was most definitely keeping an eye on all manner of things I don't think they would have brought her into it.

The initiates or AS they definitely trusted were: Myrelle, Alanna, Leane, and Sheriam. Moiraine wouldn't have been useful stuck in some backwoods town all of the time, but she'd probably want to help him with the Game. Siuan was working for the head of the Eyes and Ears, so she would have stayed in place unless the situation changed.

...If nothing else Nynaeve would either have been sent to the Tower in time or got excellent training from fellow Wilders. *pets Nyn* Also, Rand would have had an "Aunt" with a lot of husbands. :D Well, two. *looks at Alanna*

If they could have kept things secret maybe that would have been good for Rand, except that he'd be a lot more biddable. For a Two Rivers kid.

Let us see if I can make sense of the things I jotted down whilst reading.

  • Well, the first thing on my list is how Moiraine makes note that Elaida hates to look foolish. I see this personality quirk as being part of her downfall later on.
  • I've always loved the scene when Moiraine is explaining to Siuan that even though Tamra didn't say outright she could use the One Power to clean the ink stain, the meaning was there. And Siuan's reply is all "and what would you have told an Aes Sedai if she had walked in" which causes Moiraine to get all flustered and change subjects.
  • I noticed throughout the novel Moiraine is a bit preoccupied with her height in relation to others.
  • Moiraine thinks about the men and women of her father's generation within House Damodred. I am so curious about his cousins.... It's such a large family.
  • "It always seemed incongruous to see a Green doing needlework" reminded me of another Green (Cadsuane) who does needlework.
  • When finding out about how Aes Sedai defer to one another based on strength, Moiraine thinks how it would feel unnatural to have Siuan defer to her. I wonder if there is any sort of foreshadowing there given Siuan's current strength. Chances are good even if stilled, Moiraine might be Healed by a male and thus regain her full strength.
  • I discovered in this reread that the assassin chasing Moiraine is not after her just because she is a Damodred, but because the Hall has made clear their plans for her in Cairhien. If Tar Valon hadn't made their first move on putting Moiraine on the throne, chances are good she would have been ignored. I began to wonder if they just wanted to kill off the Damodreds, why not go after Taringail (being he was a Prince with a capitol P and all).
  • Moiraine is able to pass off as a minor noble of House Damodred, which means I was right all those years ago when I thought there were tiers within the Houses.
  • Lan thinks no one would willing become a Warder (haha)
  • He also thinks his hadori will attract Aes Sedai looking for a Warder. I wonder if that is true, since Moiraine decided on him from first meeting.
  • Sort of random, but Lan has an estate in Shienar. I for some reason never wondered about where Lan's funds came from or where he would sleep when not being a bad-ass.
  • Moiraine is not a wilder. When she finds herself stuck in the inn with all those Aes Sedai, they assume she is a wilder and Moiraine is grateful this desception came about on its own. I don't know if anyone here ever held the theory Moiraine was a wilder with a block la Nynaeve, but if she had been she could have said "I'm a wilder" and not have to worry about skirting the truth.

Also, I...I actually enjoyed Lan's point-of-views this time around (well not the first chapter, that one is boring). I am so shocked at myself.

She's not a wilder in the same way Nynaeve is since she didn't have a block, but she did start channeling on her own before she came to the Tower. She references making lights to find her way in the dark and also using her kesiera as a psychological aid to channel and cast her eavesdropping spell.

Yes, but it seems that's considered normal for girls with the spark (it's mentioned later it's not unusual for girls to have their own secret weaves). My main point was against those on wotmania who think Moiraine using her walking stick is signs of a block.

I was under the impression a wilder was someone who had learned to use the Power without aid, like Nynaeve, not those who simply did silly things, like Egwene, before coming to the Tower.

  • 1 year later...

*peers around* Umm Hi?!? I'm so glad I found this forum! It's a relief to find other people who share my obsession with Moiraine. :o She's the character that actually drew me into the Wheel of Time series, so mysterious, arrogant, charming, and knowing.

I recently began a reread of the series, like others here, and I just finished my first reread of the New Spring Novel. During my first read, I was completely unaware of what the term pillow friend actually meant... :P Knowing what it means the second time through has definitely changed my interpretation of all the interaction between Siuan and Moiraine! They seem so cute together! Their closeness here makes their behavoir later on in the series seem... odd.. especially their reactions when they think each other "dead." I find myself combing the first 5 books of the series now trying to find some more overt clues to their older relationship... I'm kind of sad that they grew so apart. I'm routing for them to get rid of Bryne and Tom and get back together after Tom rescues Moiraine. Oh... and Siuan needs to act more like she did in this book. Definitely like her more when her minds stuck in the gutter and she's up to mischief. She reminds me of a female Mat. cool.gif

I wish that Robert Jordan spent a little more time here showing us the inner workings of the Blue Ajah as well as covering in greater detail the changes that occur between an Accepted and a brand new spankin Aes Sedai. Siuan and Moiraine's time in the tower was definitely the better part of the work. I'd also like to find out more about Elaida and learn more about their rivalry. I like the suggestions here that Elaida liked Moiraine but alienated her and hates Siuan on the principle that she has Moiraine.

Hi, welcome to the forum, MierinSedai. I hope you like it here.

Yes, it would be nice if there was more of an indication in the later books that they had that relationship before. It's good to hear your thoughts about it. There can never be enough NS discussion (and pillowfriend talk).

 I love that smilie...

I remember when I realized Moiraine and Siuan knocked boots back in the day. It is rather strange to compare them to their later selves and their relationship. Moiraine was a lot more willing to take Siuan's lead and confide in her, but then as an adult (well you know, older adult) she actually keeps things from Siuan.

Not that I think Siuan is as good of a friend to Moiraine as she once was. :P

Heh, yeah that is a good one. :P Glad to be around here this place is interesting... lots of good reading to do.

I must say I was very disappointed that RJ tip toed around the pillow friendship between Moiraine and Siuan so much. He definitely could of included some gratuitous Aes Sedai action in Fal Dara... a perfect opportunity missed! I'd much rather read that then Rand rolling around on the floor with Aviendha. He actually seemed to avoid adult subjects and relationships... atleast to me. Actually... I'd rather read more of Moiraine and Siuan's novice shenanigans then about the last battle... I'm a big fan of fluff... :o

:o Another Moiraine/Siuan fangirl?! :o I couldn't agree more with what you said. I... I...Marry me? :P

Welcome to Moiraine's World! Don't mind the Moiraine/Thom shippers, the Moiraine/Cadsuane BDSM shippers (I'm looking at you and your new avatar, Marie!), or the general craziness of Moiraine's Worlders. We are all actually the very picture of sanity. Except for our beloved Swedish gentlemen.
