I have been reading this for a little while now.

 

Siuan's gotten to be more of a prude. Sort of. She did do a weirdly inappropriate laugh to Min about lying naked on the floor before.

I think she's more prudish now because she's pretty. When she was the Amyrlin Seat, she was the f*ing Amyrlin Seat! No one would dare flirt with her or even look at her in that type of way, and she probably wouldn't frequent any inns at all, much less crude ones in seedy areas.

 

But now (in TFoH) that she's been stilled, she not only looks younger and prettier, but she's lost all status and recognition (until she becomes Aes Sedai again, at least), so now random men on the street make a habit of looking at her or making sexual comments around/to her. She also lost her main weapon of defense, so she probably became more unsure of herself and aware that fighting off some idiot who flirted with her would be a lot harder without saidar. So my guess is that she acts prudish to try to avoid the situation entirely by ignoring any kind of sexual interest or activity.

I wonder if she'll be healed and restored to her full power by that Asha'man whose name I can't remember. It would be very hard to pull that off in a way that won't detract from the value of the whole peroid of time where she was "almost healed"

 

It just feels... Iffy.

 

I hope that doesn't wander too far off into aMoL territory to warrant a new thread, presumably every watching Chosen One.

I can't speak for Kaitlin, but I know I myself was referring to NS Siuan who did indeed visit such inns in seedy areas and now claims to be some innocent. Considering her unhappy behavior at having to recount her past pranks to the rebel Aes Sedai, it seems to me Siuan just doesn't like to remember/admit to certain things about her past.

 

Actually, you know what I really think? RJ fucked up. He wrote prude Siuan before NS Siuan and uh oh plot holes*! Just like how Siuan's age got screwed up.

Yeah, I think what Olivia said would be an excellent rationalization of some of Siuan's behavior, but I don't know if RJ would have thought about it from that point of view, or that deeply. So, I agree with you, Olivia, in spirit. Some of it, because I don't believe Old Siuan always acts entirely unselfishly. It's a part of what I liked about her until the Stilling. :/ Then, I think RJ messed up some of her character.

 

He seems to be more comfortable writing more rounded out guys than women (Riselle's bewbs nonwithstanding). It could just be a writer's quirk of his. Or even just not entirely good writing. Where were his editors then. *fist shake at Tor*

 

edit: Oh yes, I was talking about NS Siuan and Now Siuan. NS Siuan said bawdy things and visited seedy inns. Now Siuan (post Stilling) is all innocent. She forgot about sex and also apparently forgot about Moiraine being dead. We got that sort of tragic scene with Moiraine and Egwene in the tent from Egwene's POV but no scene from Siuan yet.

 

Eg was thinking she's one cold individual, but we the readers all know that when Moiraine goes super icey she's feeling something strongly. That, and the fact that she got all philosophical clues the readers into the underlying feeling of the whole scene at least during the second readthrough (Siuan and everybody dead and she's next. She doesn't know if Thom and all of them will come or if they will be successful. Siuan and Moiraine always followed each other lockstep during training). During the first read through it's sort of like we're just seeing the tip of the iceburg but we're not really sure what's under the surface.

I finished book five last weekish. Let's see, since I lost my notes (damn you, Kaitlin! I know you stole!) I will try and think of something to say.

 

Ah ha! I remember something! Nynaeve said something very Moiraine-esque--along the line of "if I explained everything to you I wouldn't have time for anything else"--and I just love when she shows signs of being Moiraine Jr (please don't kill me, Olivia).

 

Oh and Moiraine is a bit of tease; she made it sound like her letter would put Thom at ease which of course us readers, at the time, thought meant that list of names she owed him. I don't think she gave him that list. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. She so is making sure Thom comes and gets her butt either for names or sex. Or both.

This pertains to KoD, but it's about Moiraine's notes and her death too so: At first I was disappointed a bit at the mushiness of Note to Thom. However, she basically could have been saying to him that she wanted to be able to give him the list in the letter, but couldn't at the time because of Mat having to read it or more likely... she was making sure he came to save her ass.

 

Does she know that she has to come back to help Rand? If she was starting to care about Thom she probably wouldn't want him to risk dying... on the other hand Rand is her cause and she won't stop working on that for anything.

 

So. She could have made it sound like mush because she did want to let him know she cared enough at least for sex later on but the reason she wrote it mushily was not for mush in and of itself. She was hinting at list.

 

Trying to figure out Cairhienin minds makes mine hurt.

 

Also, I love Nynaeve and am starting to like Elayne more after rereading 4 and 5 this time. At least, Nana and Elayne are funny together.

 

I have more to say about Forsaken, Marie, but did you have anything else first?
