I have named my current computer Lazarus, for how many times I've had to ressurect it.

I should follow that advice as well ... well to put it in a nutshell ... I have managed to wreck my computer in every which way possible via software.

Btw, my user is called ishmael and my computer's name is shayol-ghul

Ubuntu for nearly one and a half year. But I'm really starting to hate the computer itself. It's a huge old Acer which I can't take with me anywhere and the Wacom Tablets stopped working on it a while ago and nothing happens when I try to reinstall. I'd really prefer a Macbook.

I tried to make an old Compaq laptop usable again by installing DeLi Linux (Desktop Light). I haven't used it much, though.

I have heard of the Deli linux and the DSL ... both are light versions.

I chose to move to a configurable linux distro like gentoo or arch after having used Ubuntu for 1.5yrs. Configuring Arch linux was an absolute pain ... it is almost as complex as Gentoo. But they have good resources and docs available online. For almost 2 days, I used only the command prompt and the links command line web browser :)

I think Ubuntu is the best distro for someone testing out linux after a while. Its almost as auto-configured as vista. For me, I had nothing to left configure - the sound and the video cards, printer, cameras (digital and web), external HDDs, all were taken care of just at installation.

On the other hand Arch linux did not auto-configure even the DNS server.

Well, the advantages of using a command line based browser are that one doesn't have to wait for flash images to load or deal with pop-ups (there aren't any :)).

I use NoScript with Firefox so I rarely see pop-ups and flash is normally inactivated until I say otherwise :)
