Well, I was hoping he'd leave Moiraine out, but I guess it was too much to expect. Just as well he's too much of a traditionalist (in a het male way) to have put her into Rand's harem!

Gaidin 17 wishes RJ would at least have hooked up with some younger hunk instead of ol' Thom. I kinda can't say I blame him even tho I like Thom. Maybe Mo will learn how to reverse time in Finnland and Thom will take off 20 years...

 

A midlife crisis with someone who will soon approach an end of life crisis.

 

By the way I saw a theory that said that Mo would find out that Thom can learn to channel cause his nephew Owyn knew how, so that bit is some foreshadowing (supposedly). I must say I can't imagine Thom channeling.

It'd also be incredibly late for him to realize he could, especially with all that's gone on in the series for it not to happen til now.

 

On a side note, I really don't like how the Thom x Mo thing came to be. Much too... "I lightly touched on this 7 books ago, now it's suddenly going to be a major plot device."

i think the only touch was that hand to thigh moment, and even then Thom was a bit wigged out about her using the Power on him...

Rereading the series, I get an even stronger impression that RJ came up with this in the middle of the night half-drunk. I like Mo, and I like Thom, but I NEVER saw those two as a couple. I still don't! Even that letter doesn't make it so!

I actually can see them as a couple, but there's a huge huge age difference. Thom is like 30 years older than her or something like that. Moiraine also looks from around 25-40ish. It's just jarring, right? Realistically, RJ should have made him in his 50s at most. He still could have had all of that backstory with Morgase and things would have worked out fine.

 

Otherwise, I like them together because:

 

• they are morally ambiguous
  
• excellent at playing the Game
  
• outwardly sort of opposite of each other
  
• inwardly pervy
  
• Thom makes Mo laugh, and she needs some fun
  
• Thom is not Rand
  

 

I don't dig them because:

 

• they fell in love after Mo made Thom's thigh tingle once
  
• their age difference
  
• it was fate that made them get together and...
  
• ...they didn't have enough scenes together
  
• thom is old
  
• I want to see Mo with a woman (but not Siuan)
  

 

The age thing gets to be on the list twice.

 

Yeah, I think RJ was drunk and on crack too. I see the potential of them though, if it had been written differently!

 

Thom needed to be a female gleeperson in her 40s or early 50s for Moiraine to fall for, but basically the same personality.

More scenes together and put Thom in his fifties, yeah. That would have improved it a lot.

 

But it's that 'thigh love scene' of infamy that gets me. I can't manage to read love into it. Thom seems to have a more passing interest in Moiraine, heavily offset by her Aes Sedai-ness. And I get a 'he's a fun old guy' vibe from Moiraine herself.

 

I think I may have convinced myself he's rescuing Moiraine for the Red Ajah names rather than to hump her.

I honestly (I probably already said this, but whatever) thought they wouldn't fall in love until after the rescue. You know, after they spent some quality time together away from Rand. Silly me!

I just wish the whole thing had been handled better. As ridiculous as the romance in WoT tends to be, two of my favorite characters in the series have perhaps one of the weakest hook-ups in its entirety.

I kind of feel the way that both of you do. If they come back from the rescue and immediately get married without any more attempts to get to know each other it will just kind of suck. I can't even really blame horniness for that. And I do like them together, but still.

Moiraine + Thom was more of a shock to me than Lan + Nynaeve or even Gareth + Siuan.
