Speaking of cake, I never understood the expression "You want to have your cake and eat it too", meaning someone who is trying to have two good things instead of having to compromise and decide which one to pick. I get the message behind that expression, but the expression itself doesn't make sense to me... OF COURSE I want to have a cake and eat it too! What else would I do if I had a cake?! Put it on the mantelpiece and stare at it? Why would I have a cake and NOT eat it? My mom says it means "you want to eat your cake now and also keep it" but why would I keep it, just so I can eat it later? Why wait? By the way, cake > pie, by far.
