[Split]A burqa is not a niqab!

The only reason voodoo is on my mind is probably because I recently saw a Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode dealing with it, where one of the detectives told her partner that voodoo wouldn't be looked at askance if it had been practiced by white people (she was white herself). I had never thought of it that way, honestly. And I'm a little disturbed to find wisdom in television.

And I'm a little disturbed to find wisdom in television.

:hbang: It can be disturbing, yes.

I think it's probably the sticking pins in dolls thing that people generally think of when they hear the word "voodoo" that scares them. Personally, I think that'd be a very useful thing to do...

As far as I can remember from writing a silly little text on psychosomatic death for high school psychology, the reason of death would be exclusion from the tight-knit groups and the depression that would follow. I think Voodoo itself was something like: African spiritual religion covered in Catholicism to keep up a Christian face to the slavers.

It's been years now, so that's about as much as I recall :hbang:

There is not one version of voodoo, and I know for the Louisiana Voodoo the Catholic trappings are not just a facade but were indeed incorporated into it. The Haitian Vodou, however, used it as a mask, this is true. Being American I am often more familiar with the Louisiana variety. (I also had to write a paper on the religion in college. I miss college. :hbang:)

Then it was the Haitian version I read about :hbang: I wasn't that good at picking sources back then.

:faint: I like how the natives of South and Central America did about the same, incorporating Catholicism into their own religions. I remember having to sing a song about how Jesus was born in Peru in Spanish class.

The same thing happened everywhere, Paganism was incorporated into Christianity when the missionaries were trying to convert the masses over in Europe. It eased the transition if people could still hold on to some of their old practises
