It's a descendant of rugby football (now just called rugby). FYI they call it football in Canada too. In fact, the term soccer comes from England, so you can't even lay that at the feet of Americans.

I was curious where the term "soccer" came from and it turns out it's an abbr. of association football. Yeah. Never would have guessed that.

Well, my parents love Football and are American. Both of them are far more intelligent than I. But, any time you make broad generalizations you end up wrong. :P

I phrased it "American Football" out of respect because most of the people here would think I was talking about the other one. :D It does make much more sense that Football Football should be called that! Thanks, Marie, for that info about rugby. I had no idea, and it makes sense.

What I hate most about it is all the breaks they take! Also - I am called a jinx because everytime I'm around a television - sports bar, some one's house, whatever - the local team starts losing!

There's also a lot of college educated people (not that going to college means you're smart :D ) who enjoy rooting for their school's team, even after they've graduated. College football really is more fun than pro.

Every Thanksgiving there's the Duel in the Desert - ASU vs. U of A. Even my blood gets hot during that time. *waves Wildcat flag*

Sorry all, I didn't mean that as personal insults to you. I've just never understood what is so entertaining about men running around in tights slamming into each other. Then they stop, line up again, run for 10 sec, then stop, line up again, and repeat. I guess I just never liked the game.

And the general public of America aren't knowledgable/educated I should have said, instead of intelligent. There have been all kinds of surveys where they walk up to random people on the street in America and ask them questions like "How many kidneys does a person have?" or "On this map, point to New York state", and other simple questions, and the normal people are unable to answer.

But the people on these fora and their families are no doubt intelligent (because they read and understand complex books like WoT) and I never meant what I said as insults to any of you, you all have my continuing respect and I apologize for my statement and for sounding like a conceited idiot. :D

There's no doubt in my mind as a whole America is....ignorant. Which simply means lacking knowledgable, not stupid, like a lot of Americans think!

I wasn't insulted, by the way. *doesn't watch football* I was just being a know-it-all. :D

Ooh, I thought there was that other birthday thread... Happy Birthday again! :D

P.S.: I find the fact that Americans call American football "football" just so insanely funny! Marie is right, though, the terms come from association and rugby football, though the rules of rugby and American footy differ to an extent. There is also Australian rules... *is being a know-it-all as well*
