Another oddity. In NS A Wish Fulfilled we read "Moiraine, however, had received the education expected of a noblewoman, everything from history to the Old Tongue, which she spoke and read well enough that she had been excused classes in it."

Yet, at the end of EotW, I seem to remember her handing the Horn of Valere to Loial, asking him to translate the inscription on it. I can't be 100% sure (as my books aren't accessible to me at the moment :P ), but I'm pretty certain she says outright that she cannot speak the Old Tongue.

What...? But she was speaking the Old Tongue in that same book. She was rather weak at the point in the book when the horn appeared, and I don't remember her saying anything about not being able to speak the Old Tongue. In fact, I think she said something about not being able to read that dialect because it was so old.

She can speak the Old Tongue, and much much better than most Nobles, who only bother to learn a few words - if that.

Passages with her translating the Old Tongue are all over in all the books. She does it for Mat when he starts babbling the OT during that first fight with Trollocs and Fades in EotW, and all through the rest of the series.

She can certainly speak it, but she is not fluent. Ogier would be sure to know the right nuances, and so that's another reason she wanted Loial to read it.

Didn't she translate the inscription on the Horn at the end of EotW in the first place? :P

Go reread the series and see what I mean. Of course she knows it! That one's not a mistake. :D

Yeah...you are definitely misremembering that passage. I did too. She doesn't say anything about her speaking ability.

"Is it . . . ?" Loial stopped to catch his breath. "Can it be . . . ?"

"You can read the Old Tongue?" Moiraine asked, and when he nodded, she handed him the horn

Earlier in the book:

But Mat shouted, "Carai an Caldazar! Carai an Ellisande! Al Ellisande!"

....

"Carai an Caldazar," Moiraine said. They all twisted to stare at her. "Carai an Ellisande. Al Ellisande. For the honor of the Red Eagle. For the honor of the Rose of the Sun. The Rose of the Sun...."

"Peace, but it is good to see you, Dai Shan," the Lord of Fal Dara said. "And you, Moiraine Aes Sedai, perhaps even more. Your presence warms me, Aes Sedai."

"Ninte calichniye no domashita, Agelmar Dai Shan," Moiraine replied formally, but with a note in her voice that said they were old friends. "Your welcome warms me, Lord Agelmar."

CLEAR! *ZAP* CLEAR! *ZAP*

Ok so I'm reading TFoH again and I came across the part where Elayne/Nynaeve are trying to join up with the circus ppl. Luca mentions that their other highwalker died after falling off the platforms, and he says the guy's name was Sedrin. I had the feeling I had heard the name Sedrin before, and sure enough when I checked back through NS, one of the babies that Moiraine takes the name of is called Sedrin, the son of a Murandian noblewoman! :) Either it's a coincidence or RJ is insane about details!!!

I also noticed an error (or what I think is an error). Again in TFoH, chapter Sallie Daera, Siuan is being interrogated by the other rebel Aes Sedai to find out if she is really Siaun Sanche. They all ask her questions about memories from being a novice, but "Myrelle, the youngest by years, confined herself to amused comments..."

What does RJ mean "youngest by years?" Myrelle is Accepted with Moriaine and Siuan and helps them practice for the Aes Sedai test (which means she is rather close to her testing as well at the time, so therefore is probably no more than two or three years younger/older), and it is also mentioned in NS (chapter Practice) that Myrelle was "an Accepted from Altara who had earned the ring in the same year as they" (they being Mo and Siuan). So WTF? o.O

Wow... you read carefully... I'm scared of you! :)

I have heard that RJ is insane about details, but it could also be a little matter of two people having the same name! About Myrelle, yeah, it sounds odd, but perhaps it's a technicality - I mean, she could be months/weeks/days younger! *clutching at straws*

But it does say "youngest by years" and her being younger is the reason she doesn't know about all their pranks. Moiraine also says she is a close friend, so Myrelle was probably included in some of those pranks. I think it's just a small error. I mean, you gotta give RJ some leeway, if he pays THAT much attention to so many small details then he is bound to make a few small errors in other parts of the books. ^_^

She could be Moridin. He seems to be able to do the wierdest things.

I have to admit....that theory never ocurred to me. But that would mean that Lan slept with Moridin!!! O_O

Yay!

RJ could have reused the name, or it could just be a nice tying together of things. :) He does keep character files.

Carlinya and Sheriam are definitely around the same ages as Siuan and Myrelle. That's something he missed when he went back to expand NS, I bet!
