Lan and Moiraine: BFF?

There are people on a certain message board that I will not name who insist Lan is nothing more than a slave and has no feelings for Moiraine outside of obligation, and that she in turn feels for him only as one would a, well, slave.

 

I personally disagree, and the more I look back at scenes of them together I get a definite sense of friendship, and since they are each others only friends really, by default they become best friends. I know the Siuan lovers are going to raise a fuss, but really, her and Lan spent far more time together than her and Siuan ever have. And he cried for her! Well got teary and cried in private. Siuan is just all 'oh whatever. She's dead'.

 

Anyway I'm getting off topic! The point is I believe Lan and Moiraine are buddies not just work partners.

Yep, I have always thought he cared for her as a friend and not just took orders from her.

They were friends. They were like a married couple that had been married so long they seemed a little more like brother and sister, only with Lan and Mo no romance happened first. *giggle*

 

Of course, they were dysfunctional, but that was an interesting thing about them. Those people on whatever site that was just want to believe that for a particular reason, because nobody could have had any good relationship with Lan before... a certain person... and of course not a woman and object of jealousy.

Anyway, I really don't think you can go through what Lan and Moiraine did on a mere slave/mistress relationship. It has more than once been made clear that both care deeply for the other. Remember how Moiraine made arrangements to have his bond passed so he wouldn't seek death after she died? And yes, he did cry when she "died". There were times when he seemed deeply hurt by some of the things Moiraine did. Mo, on the other hand, always did seem "sorry" at some of the harder decisions she made regarding Lan.

 

Er... with apologies to Siuan lovers, I don't think Moiraine's relationship with her and with Lan can even be compared

I think they can be compared. We compare friendship all the time, thus the phrase "best friends". You can't have a best friend unless you decided that person and you had a closer bond than you and someone else.

If we had to compare them then I would say Lan and Moiraine were closer, but thats only because of the amount of time they spent with one another

No offense, but..isn't that how it always works? I mean, Moiraine and Siuan can't stay close if they are never around each other. Fact is, I think they grew apart and probably would have with or without the Dragon Reborn.
