  1. what's with the title? Any thoughts, anyone?

It's from the book's opening "quote".

The sweetness of victory and the bitterness of defeat are alike a knife of dreams. — From Fog and Steel by Madoc Comadrin

I guess "victory and defeat" could refer to a lot of the battles/conflicts in this book. Perrin/Faile vs the Shaido, the Seanchan vs Mat, Rand vs Semi, Egwene captive in the Tower but still "winning", Elayne vs the BA and trying to get the throne, etc...

The "knife of dreams" part could either mean "they're not real; they're just made of dreams" or it could mean just the opposite, since in WoT dreams are very real and can be utilized as weapons.

Or it could just be RJ trying to be poetic and mess with the readers again. *shrug* Beats me.

  2. What don't you like about them? They look pretty great to me. *jealous of Olivia and Marie*

I just don't like the artwork much, particularly Lan's. And Momo would never actually say "I will drub you until you squeal", she'd just think it. :D Still, it could be worse, and even so I am looking forward to when my #7 arrives.

edit: Jealous of me why? o.O

  3. Great find, Mierin! Laugh-out-loud hilarious  I especially liked Moiraine's "history" of Emond's Field... and Eggy's reaction. :P

"Can I come too?" asked Egwene, biting her thumb. "I really liked your story."
  4. Hmm, I haven't read either ch. 1 or 2, but...

I think Mesaana is that Aes Sedai who was stripped of her shawl.

Didn't that sister run away in LoC and hasn't been seen since? Shemerin? :D

Poor crazy-ass Elaida. I would *love* to know how she ended up so mad...like she was stern (as Eqwene right points out) but not tyranical.

I think it was Fain's influence in TFoH that ordered the U-Haul for her move to crazy-land. And I lament with you about the loss of our prospects for Elaida on Meidani action! :D

  5. The damane thing... It's another situation where they are treated as animals. :/

I think that's why men who take damane to their beds are seen as perverts; it's considered close to bestiality. :) Damn I hate the Seanchan.

I think for me it is the sheer number of female virgins in the story. The only shining light I can see is horny ass Galina, and Tarna breaking the Red stereotype and sexing some men up on occasion.

And Tylin. :o Can't forget the Queen of Cougars. Plus a couple background chars are mentioned as liking the menfolk - but you're both right: the main female cast is overwhelmingly younger, less experienced, and more attractive than their male S.O., a beef I have had with WoT for some time :)

  6. Oooh. Yes, I recall. No idea who Norine is either, though...

Oooh, Olivia, could you be wonderful and post a handy link to a relevant theory regarding Danelle/Mesaana?

Of course. :oHere's Norine, who is also a Mesa candidate, and here's the Danelle theory. That second site has a lot of good info and theories from all books except KoD, and although some of it is wrong it is all very interesting! :)

  7. I have no idea who Danelle is. :o

She's a dreamy, blue-eyed Brown who helped Elaida depose Siuan. She hasn't been around much since then, but we get a few mentions of seeing her 'round the Tower halls and such. Here we go. :) It's not surprising that ppl don't remember her; when I first read the "Mesaana is Danelle" theory I had to go search her name on that site to find out who she was, because I had no idea either. :)

  8. Urgh... *groan* Years later, I finally noticed something in NS I really should have picked up the first time reading. Please feel free to smack me if I was the only one who didn't pick up on this little piece of retardation and everyone else already noticed.

Lan's daori, his big woven lock of hair, is to be given to his spouse at his wedding... His dowry (daori).

    RJ... man... :D

  9. Would Mesaana hide herself as a Novice?

I haven't read this prologue, but I don't think that's likely. It was pointed out on the WoTFAQs that Alviarin sees Mesaana as wearing fancy silk clothes (I think it's in CoT) right after Alvi uses the little ter'angreal to immediately summon Mesaana in case of emergency. That means that Mesaana had to drop everything and go Travel to meet Mesaana - as a Novice, she wouldn't have been able to just duck out in the middle of class or kitchen duty and then go to some secluding spot where she hid her fancy dresses, change, then also Travel either in that same spot or somewhere else where there was zero chance of being seen. Then change back after talking w/ Alviarin. And the fancy clothes weren't part of the Illusion, they were under the Illusion, and Mesa wasn't even aware the Illusion had been broken around her hem far enough for Alvi to see the actual clothes underneath.

But RJ did say she was someone who had been seen in the series before, not some random person who's never introduced. My first guess was Tarna, but now I think I was wrong and she's Danelle. (again, not originally my theory but I agree with it)
