  1. Well, channelers use Water to pull water from their hair to dry it, so I imagine they can pull a splinter out or pop a blister or some such with Air. They probably just have to be a little more careful with weaves that touch your body directly (as you noted). Weaves like some types of Illusion-disguises also probably touch the body in some places.

...Naughty thought of the day (that has probably already occurred to others on this forum): I wonder if you can channel something into your body? :D If Siuan Sanche could make an Air sword in TGH, could pillow friends make Air dildos? :P

  2. The rectangle at the bottom of the forum page has informed me that today is Ajit's birthday!! :P Many happy returns, good fellow!

I did a google search for "party" images, but most of the returns were, um, distasteful. So here's a nice big cake instead!

  3. Holy HELL those are some amazing drawings of Moiraine! :D *saves them all* Why can't the normal book covers be so awesome?! I really like the last 2 sketches as well. I'm glad they picked the most awesome scene in the book to illustrate! Thanks for finding these, Amy :P

  4. Hmm, well some of my personal favorites are Alexandra, Gabrielle/Gabriel, Ariel, Julian, Nathaniel, Asher, or Japanese names like Natsuki, Kiyo, Kuga.

Or you could just make up a name that's pretty/classy/cool sounding, like, um, off the top of my head... Leona, Corsan, Shinran, Akhti, Dekliri, Ashrael, Borr, Godokai, Reinalea...

*shrugs* Be creative! :P But don't focus too much on looking for/creating a "cool" name, focus more on developing the character as a cool person so they don't need a cool name. Also keep in mind context - for example don't give a villager an extravagant, multi-syllable name with apostrophes when everyone else in the village has easily pronounced, one to three syllable names.

  5. Someone recommend a book for me? I really don't want to reread wot...again.

Hrmm :( I just finished reading a book of Sappho's poetry today, so if you want something short and lovely I'd suggest checking the library/bookstore for a copy of her surviving work. Or you could torture yourself and read CoT again. :siuandance:

  6. One of my guesses though with Mat's prophecies (?) from the Door Way was "You must give up half the light of the world to save the world". Or something.

I'm thinking he may give up have of the land (Some of Rand's), to the Seanchan? But not for his "Wife" (Though to her?). But he'll be face with some dilemma and that's the only solution.

At least that's the only guess I could come up with so far on what that means. Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe something involving one of the Forsaken?

The prevailing fan theory is that "give up half the light of the world" means Mat will lose one of his eyes. I think this was supported by one of Egwene's Dreams had where Mat had blood streaming down one side of his face, but the wound was hidden by his hat.

  7. -Min's last viewing, of Nynaeve standing sorrowfully over a corpse. Who is it? Lan? Rand?

I sure hope it's not Lan, but it very well could be. But I think it has to do with the coming "Rand faking his own death" plotline that has been so heavily foreshadowed in other books.

but then it was like "YES! Verin FTW!!!"

I agree! Verin is probably my new favorite AS (after Moiraine, of course).

-We still need to ascertain the identities of Mesaana and Demandred. Could Mesaana be in the hands of the Seanchan after all? RJ had said long ago that Mazrim Taim (regrettably not mentioned in TGS) was NOT Demandred. That's a tough one, for me.

I still think Mesaana is Danelle, even though she didn't show up in this book. I don't think she would have just slipped away during the Seanchan attack/aftermath. I agree that Demandred's whereabouts are worrying - we know he's got a hand in the Black Tower, though not as Taim, and I'm afraid he may have done something to that delegation of AS that came to bond Asha'man at the end of KoD, even though Taim agreed to it. Maybe Aran'gar has something to do with that too? I wonder where he/she fled to.

-It appears the Seanchan are doing a better job of taking care of their conquered people than Rand could (i.e. Arad Doman). Will fighting the Seanchan backfire because of this?

Gawd I hope not. I hate those people. It doesn't matter how happy a conquered people are if their empire is built on the backs of slaves like damane and da'covale. I wonder how Tuon, er, Fortuona lol, will handle the revelation of sul'dam being able to channel too, since she found out while with Mat. Sadly, as I think someone else already pointed out before me, she doesn't seem to have changed.

-Moiraine will be back. I have a feeling that she will be the one to direct the weaves against the Dark One using Callandor

My first instinct was that it would be Elayne and Aviendha who would complete Callandor's circle with Rand, to emphasize the whole "Power of Love" theme we have going now. But you're right, Moiraine is another good theory - I think if Momo does it then the other will be Cadsuane. Heh, Rand's old and new "advisors" working together, or maybe just as a symbol that he can trust those two enough to let them lead a circle.

  8. Momo (and other AS who use aliases) usually just go with "You may call me Alys/Eadwina/Lady Shawl-Sniffer/etc." Saying "My name is Alys" would violate the First Oath, but I guess she could just say "I am Lady Alys", since after all, she is the person known as Lady Alys, and no one else is Lady Alys. Or she could just have Lan do it, like you said.

  9. I never read the novella, but I can say with certainty that there is no scene in NS the novel where Moiraine takes someone's breeches off, nor are the al'Thors mentioned. I remember a scene where some Tairen leers at her in the street, but she brushes him off by displaying the colored stripes on her dress, indicating that she is a noble and waaay too good for him to even try hitting on - so maybe that is the scene that RJ wrote differently in the original novella.

I had no idea the novel and novella were different except for length, which is why I never bothered reading the novella once I got NS the novel. I may well go buy the novella now just to see how many differences I can spot. Often the "little tidbits" in RJs writing are just as amusing/interesting as the major scenes.

sidenote: I've seen things like "Google fu" and "Archives fu" but never "WoT kung fu" :) I <3 you, Marie :P

  10. Yeah, for me it's mainly his claim to be in love with three people at once, each one no more or less than the other two, that irritates me. His other annoying qualities can either be chalked up to Mary Sue-ness (like Vertex mentioned) or to the extreme pressure he's living under as the Dragon Reborn.

  11. Happy New Year to you all, too, Moiraine's World! :siuandance: (<--- that emote is the best thing to come out of 2009 :D)

    Aw, Jan =/ :glomp:

I spent a quiet New Year's, out walking and enjoying the full moon, thinking about how much has happened to me not just in 2009 but in the last decade. *shakes head* Hard to believe it's 2010 already. Here's to us all surviving another year! *lifts glass* (I'm a teetotaler, so I drink apple cider too, AshSnow ;) Martinelli's is the best)

I've decided not to make New Year's Resolutions. If you feel you have to make a resolution just for the sake of the calendrical date, you're probably not going to bother to see it through. I prefer to make resolutions at other times. I am looking forward to seeing how the gym I go to fills up over the next month with poor fools who made "lose weight/get in shape" resolutions. Most will be gone within a few weeks :)
