The Lan/Nyn pairing caught me blindsided when I read it. I mean seriously, when the...Helicopter...Did that happen? They walked...Then they walked some more, during which Lan stayed a kilometre or so ahead of everybody else..Then the women get locked up and guarded by angry men...Then they walked through a very desolate, creepy and deadly landscape...And then they go and have whispering conversations about their fobidden love in the middle of a camp of people that are scared shitless and could probably become wide awake in seconds. Oh and did I mention they are still in the most dangerous and unsavory place in the WoT realms?

The old man/young woman relationships wouldn't bother me if there weren't so many of them.

 

I wouldn't have a problem with Rand and his girls (you shouldn't insult people, even if you don't approve of their way of life (or if their fictional) ) if just ONE girl wasn't pretty/beautiful.

Eeeks! I'm personally offended that you'd think the term "hos" is insulting! If it wasn't for brave sex workers, the world would be a much worse place! Niklas would have one less giggly subject to think about! Aaand he just learned the word floozy too... if there weren't any hos, that word would not exist and then he'd know a word without a meaning. Elayne is (assuming Morgase was faithful to Taringal) related to Moiraine, so I kind of like that she isn't ugly. The other two should have been though.

 

I can't stop calling Rand and his hos, just that: hos. It just rolls off the tongue so nicely.

Avi saw futures in the rings just like Moiraine. I don't remember if it was clear that she saw that, but she kind of gave up trying during the big snowstorm.

 

When I first read the series I honestly didn't expect more from RJ. It was a fantasy story. The love pairings would be unrealistic. Everyone would be beautiful. Their love for each other would never die, and if the man died the woman would love him for his bravery (because there's no way he'd ever die in any way other than with mighty heroism if he was a "good guy") and would hold onto that love like a proper soldier's wife until the next even older man came along.

 

After reading what some authors have put out since the start of WoT, and especially after reading a couple of the Discworld books I realized there really could be better out there.

 

Nyn/Lan bothered me. I was sort of happy it wasn't Mo/Lan though, just because that seemed like a likely sort of pairing for a fantasy novel too. I mean, they are "bonded" and are a team. It's refreshing that they're platonic in whatever affections there are too. I hated Thom/Mo at first but was talked into it on the forum. Now I look past Thom's incredible age and just like the fact that he's a gleeman. He's my concession in the Old Man/Younger Woman thing. It helps that Moiraine's in her forties and not Dena's age.

 

Elayne always struck me as a little too incestual. First she and Gawyn are a little too teamy. She has a weird thing about Galad. Though it's understandable she'd hate someone always being so perfect something just squicked me about her when she talked about him. She fawns over her mother. She practiced hitting on Thom around the time that she found out her mother had been doing him. Now she's sleeping with Rand... who's not related technically, but is related to Elayne's one brother.

 

I would like Min and Avi better if they were less attractive. Avi did seem to be the more experienced one with Rand... so there's that I guess. :/ If Min were a lot older it might make the 3 girls 1 cupofRand more palatable, so to speak.

 

I thought Siuan/Gareth was going too far with the age difference thing. Siuan's not young but she looks it. I liked Gareth otherwise. Oh, there's Morgase and her boytoy, but I think he's only a few years younger? RJ shouldn't have been so cliche.
