Thom! Oh noes!

I decided (probably stupidly too) that it's time to get all the Thom hating out, so I made a topic that is ACTUALLY about why you DO or DO NOT like Thom/Moiraine.

 

Revelation!

I don't like Thom/Moiraine myself. I just accept it.

 

Well known fact:

I do not think Siuan/Moiraine is the solution.

Ok I'll try to keep my answer simple Thom is old, he only has a few decades left in him. Moiraine is younger, espeically if she comes back with that youthful-stilled thing. Therefore she will be a young, beautiful woman with a wrinkled old man who probably won't be incredible in bed and she will have to watch him keep withering and declining, which must be emotionally painful.

 

Ok so what if they decide their love is true and transcends physical limitations? That kind of love is fine, but I don't think it's quite justified for the two of them. They have some significant similarities, and I think they'd make good friends or manipulation partners (or even lovers), but marriage just doesn't seem like the best course. In the end I have a bit of a crush on Moiraine and want to see her with a woman or at least a gorgeous guy. But, Moiraine/Thom is in the books, so I've accepted it.

But why is Lan/Nynaeve ok then? And technically, just being around Rand has made it so none of them have much time left at all. And there is evidence that Thom is just fine in bed.

 

Having reread WoT a bit it doesn't really seem an afterthought. It was cleverly there for those who weren't shallow and just went "oh he's old...Moiraine doesn't like old people". Moiraine doesn't consider herself young. This is probably because she hasn't lived past normal human lifespan yet, so in her mind her and Thom are not that far apart. Also, I know when you are a teen anyone over 25 is like omg ancient! But the older you get the lesser the gap gets, unless of course you think being young and pretty is all that matters.

 

So. Why do I like Thom? Because he really is the male Moiraine. Out of all the characters they have the most in common and could be build the most solid base for a relationship. I'm not a huge fan of Thom's womanizing. But he seems to have halted that in favor of Moiraine, and that is why I love them together.

Iv never found older men particularly attractive, rather the opposite, and I suppose my dislike of Thom is slightly superficial but until I read momo's letter to him I didn't think that there was anything sexual between them

Yes. I think people think about his white hair and think of him as 80 and all doughy and definitely not able to be sexual in any way. That's not his character.

 

I had trouble thinking of Momo and Thom together before because.. I wanted to think of someone very lovely looking with Momo. That's not very fair.

 

Fans love Lan/Nyn and think they are so wonderful and Lan is so hot.. he's drawn pretty in lots of pictures. Lan is ugly. *shrug* I don't have to pretend Lan is pretty to think he's hot anymore.. and I don't have to feel icky about Thom either just because he's not young.

 

When I matured I was able to read into the books more and see that there was a relationship there between Thom and Mo, and it was a very interesting one. So, I want to read more about it!

 

And those are my reasons for loving Thom/Mo!

Personally I absolutely totally hate Moiraine paired with Thom. Why? Because Moiraine is beutiful, Thom is not; Moiraine is interesting, Thom is not; Thom is ugly and annoying, Moiraine is not...

Thom...Well...Thom is just boring. I mean what the hell, what has he ever done that has been enjoyable to read about? From what I remember of the books Thoms storyline has been something like this. (I can't remember what happened to him before Mat met up with him in Tar Valon).

 

He became a drunk and groped some barmaids.

He jumped on a boat and complained about his leg.

He wandered about in Tear with Mat and then he got sick.

He sneaked around in the stone of Tear gossiping.

He slapped Elayne. (as much as I like Elayne he did the right thing there.)

Well I'm starting to get tired of this and my memory fails me but it seems to me all he has done is being a grumpy old man, albeit a grumpy old man with a large amount of sharp objects hidden about his person.

 

So, Thom is a boring character and it would be more fun to have Moiraine with someone who will create some enjoyable reading. But then again I can't really think of who that might be..Apart from Suian but thats probably just the insanity speaking.
