V Will agree that the ending should be climatic and somewhat depressing, so as to set up for additional novels, or give Jan a rep for sad endings.

^ Satisfying the persons demand, one of the characters should die, and people close to them should think they are dead and become sad and depressed. But later the character will show up again, not dead, saved some how through some kind of "trade", that which came at a great cost. And will make a dramatic reappearance into everyone's life!

If that doesn't fit...just make another happy ending
